2024 Movies “Outside the Box” Yesterday is coming It feels like a reference to an old quip in a movie. “Who needs enemies when you have friends like these?” Let me preface this by saying that not a single character in the entire movie is likable.
However, there are some really good performances and the script leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The story itself does something that many movies fail to do successfully. It’ll make you think about what you just saw long after the credits roll.
Writer/Director Joston Lamonte Call Yesterday is coming“A Crisis of the Ego.” It’s hard to watch at times, but strangely fascinating at the same time. Watching it over and over helps break things down, but yeah. The crisis is right around the corner.
story
Douglas and his wife, Veronica, were heading to the mountains. After a sudden career change, he suffered from writer’s block. Veronica invited his best friend Dan and his wife Pia.
Bad idea.
Douglas hears Dan seemingly admit to sleeping with Veronica, and the melting ship sets sail.
Cast
Nicholas Brendon is Douglas Winter. Brendon is best known for his role in the small screen version of Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was new to the character and could imagine the character following him around like a lost puppy. Brendan has been working steadily since the series ended in 2003. Yesterday is coming.
Jackie Moore plays Veronica Collins. Jackie keeps busy in the industry. She also stars in the movie “Charm Killer” which was just released on November 1st. Here she plays an “old” actress. Like Douglas, she was unhappy.
Felipe Andre Botello stars as Dan McGee. Botero is from criminal minds, Where he and Brendan worked together. He is the author of many books, including The Art of Self-Defense. Here, Dan is the best friend from hell.
Shoshana Wilder stars as Pia Cotto-McGee. Wilder has an impressive sincerity. The Canadian actor is busy. She is Dan’s wife, Pia, and a reluctant object of desire.
twists and turns
Yesterday is coming Made up of a surprising number of twists and turns.
For Winter.
He seemed to have just gone through a mid-life crisis, ending it all. We witness this man undergo a breakdown that is so shocking that it is almost unbearable.
His downward spiral affects everyone in his inner circle.
Oops.
Winter’s journey is difficult, even soul-destroying.
it works
Yesterday is coming It’s a strange title and I must admit I didn’t understand it until writing this review. *Ego crisis. remember?
This movie works. Although the ending is open-ended, it’s somewhat confusing. It did its job.
Cinematographer David Gordon makes every frame count. Whether they are directly “in your face” or “fly on the wall” scenes. Even those strange dreamlike exchanges he handled with deftness. Gordon does a great job of blending all of these moments together.
Producer/director/writer Turney leaves a lot open to interpretation. *Turney also edited his film. He is another “cottage industry” filmmaker.
He asked us many questions that were never answered.
For example:
Winter’s hands, fingers and nails appear to be splattered with paint? Or did he partially paint his nails and get tattoos on his limbs?
Winter’s face. The man makes Gaunt look like George Clooney. Brendon’s protagonist looks like a drug-addled creature who fell to earth like a burned-out star. His appearance indicated a lifetime of drug and alcohol abuse.
Why are Douglas and Dan friends?
How did so many self-centered people come together?
Has Douglas found himself by the end of the film?
Really? Who needs such friends?
Judgment
Yesterday is coming It’s solid entertainment. Although to me this movie was neither fish nor fowl, I couldn’t stop watching it. It makes you think and question the journey Winter is currently on.
This is 3.75 out of 5 stars. However, if you like movies that make you think, or that you’re talking about long after you’ve seen them, then this is probably for you. Yesterday is coming Releases December 13th.
