Taylor Swift is the top winner at the 2024 Billboard Music Awards, taking home 10 new awards, and many other artists also picked up more during the two-hour show that aired Thursday (December 12) on Fox. awards.
Reflecting his cross-genre appeal, Zach Bryan won five awards on the night, two for country and two for rock. (His fifth award was for best streaming song.)
Morgan Wallen won four awards, bringing his career total to 19, just one shy of Garth Brooks’ record as the most awarded country artist. Warren’s third win for Top Country Artist tied him with Brooks and Swift for the most wins in the category. It’s Warren’s third win in this key category in four years. Shaboozey, Bad Bunny, Drake and Christian music group Elevation Worship each received three awards. This brings Drake’s career win total to 42, second only to Swift. This brings Bad Bunny’s career win total to 16. Drake’s win includes a record sixth win as a top rap artist. Bunny’s win includes a record fifth consecutive win as the top Latin artist. Elevation Worship’s wins include being named “Top Christian Artist” for the second time. They previously won in 2021. Lauren Daigle leads the way with four wins.
Other artists who have topped the BBMA all-time list and moved up this year include Beyoncé, who won a 17th award that seemed unlikely a year ago – top female country artist. Post Malone won his 11th BBMA Award for Best Collaboration for “I Had Some Help,” recorded with Wallen.
Benson Boone, CeCe Winans, Chandler Moore, Charli XCX, Fuerza Regida, Jung Kook, Kacey Musgraves, Linkin Park, SZA, Teddy Swims, Tommy Richman and Tyla each received two awards.
SZA won Best R&B Artist for the second year in a row. SZA is the first woman to win the award for Best R&B Artist multiple times. R. Kelly has the most wins in this category — four. Arthur followed the three. 50 Cent and The Weeknd also won twice.
Country singer Wallen won Best Male Artist for the second year in a row, while regional Mexican band Fuerza Regida won Best Duo/Group for the second year in a row, underscoring the diverse nature of the music industry in 2024. (These are all types of categories.)
This is Warren’s second win for Best Male Artist, which ties him with Justin Bieber for the second-most wins in the category. Drake led the way with three points.
This is Fuerza Regida’s second win in the top duo/team competition, which ties them with Destiny’s Child and Imagine Dragons for the second-most wins in the division. BTS and One Direction are tied for the lead, with three wins each.
The progress of black artists in country music was reflected not only in Beyoncé’s win for Best Female Country Vocal Performance, but also in Shabuzy’s win for Best Country Song for “Bar Song (Drunk).” His crossover hit topped the Hot Country Songs chart for 25 consecutive weeks.
The lines between country and rock are increasingly blurred, with artists primarily known as country stars winning in the rock and hard rock categories. Zach Bryan won best rock song for “I Remember Everything,” featuring Kacey Musgraves. Falling in Reverse’s “All My Life” (performed by 2023 CMA New Artist of the Year winner Jelly Roll) won Best Hard Rock Song.
Both artists managed to win Best Album and Best Song in their respective genres. Jung Kook wins Best K-Pop Album gold and “Standing By Your Side,” the world’s top K-pop song. Elevation Worship wins Best Christian Album Can you imagine? and “Praise” featuring Brandon Lake and Chris Brown for best Christian song.
Fun fact: Two artists named Chris Brown emerged as winners. The R&B star won Best R&B Album for: 11:11. As mentioned above, the Christian artist of the same name won Best Christian Song.
Some artists’ wins mark real breakthroughs in their careers. Jack Antonoff won the Hot 100 Producer Award. That should bring him some consolation, as he surprisingly didn’t win the Grammy for Non-Classical Producer of the Year.
Luis Miguel beats out Bad Bunny for “Best Latin Artist” and “Best Latin Male Artist” and Karol G for “Best Latin Female Artist” G), won the award for “Best Latin Touring Artist.”
There are some surprises on the list of winners. Teddy Swims’ “Lose Control” spent a week at the top of the Hot 100 in March, beating Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” which spent a record 19 weeks at the top, to win the Hot 100 spot. 100 singles chart number one. How is this possible? On October 28, 2023, “Out of Control” has entered its 10th week on the Hot 100 Singles Chart, which is the first week of the tracking period. But it hasn’t broken through 58th, so it hasn’t lost many points. In contrast, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” entered the charts on April 27, 2024, halfway through the tracking year. Sleeper hits that were on the charts for the entire tracking period beat out instant smashes that were on the charts for only half of the tracking period.
Trolls: unite won the award for Best Score, beating Hazbin Hotel: Season 1 and tornadowait. Trolls: unite debuted on the Soundtrack chart on November 4, 2023 (one week into the year), and also charted on the weekly charts for the year. Hazbin hotel debuted in February and tornado August. Troll Popular because of its sustained consistent chart performance over a long period of time, as opposed to soundtrack music with shorter bursts of big activity.
Sabrina Carpenter, who was shortlisted for nine awards, happened to not win any, Billie Eilish, Future, Jack Harlow, Luke Combs Neither did Luke Combs, Metro Boomin or The Weeknd, who were all shortlisted for four awards.
