The 75th Berlin International Film Festival awarded Berlin Film Festival favorite Tilda Swinton the Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement. The award will be awarded at the opening ceremony of the Berlin Film Palace on February 13, 2025.
“The range of Tilda Swinton’s work is astonishing,” said Tricia Tuttle, director of the Berlin Film Festival. “She brought so much humanity, compassion, wisdom, humor and style that she expanded our view of the world through her work. Tilda is one of our icons of modern filmmaking and has long been We are delighted to be able to present her with the Honorary Golden Bear as part of the Berlinale family.
Swinton has been a regular at the Berlinale for decades, starring in 26 films that have been screened in different sections of the festival over the years. Highlights include Derek Jarman’s caravaggioWes Anderson’s film won the Silver Bear at the 1986 Berlin Film Festival grand budapest hotelopening the 2014 Film Festival and the 2016 Berlin Film Festival Hi Cesar! From the Coen brothers. In 2009, she served as President of the Berlin Competition Jury.
“The Berlinale was the first film festival I attended, and the first film Derek Jarman and I made in 1986 was his caravaggio,” Swinton said in a statement. “This was my gateway into the world of my life’s work – the world of international filmmaking – and I will never forget the debt I owe to it. To be honored in this way at this special festival, for me I am deeply moved: it will be my honor and pleasure to celebrate again next February the seedbed of this eye-opening, reliably wonderful gathering.”
Most recently, Swinton is touring for Pedro Almodóvar’s awards season next door room (2024), the Spanish director’s first English-language feature, in which she co-stars with Julianne Moore. Swinton just received a Golden Globe and Spanish Goya nomination for Best Actress for her performance.
The 75th Berlin International Film Festival will be held from February 13 to 23, 2025.
