“Yesterday, someone knocked down my mural/That energy makes you feel like you moved to Europe,” is the first bar we hear on the intro track to Kendrick’s latest album GNX Mariachi singer Deyra Barrera used her beautiful singing voice to show Lamar a full range of Southern California street culture.
The mural the Compton rapper is referring to was painted on the side of Tam’s Burgers, the burger joint featured in his “Not Like Us” video, and was painted by artist Mike Norice. Norris said on his Instagram that he recorded a video of the mural being defaced and said it happened after a Dodgers game.
However, he could also be talking about another mural that artists Sloe Motion and Gustavo Zermeño Jr. painted earlier this summer on the back of Mi Sabor, a Honduran restaurant in Rosecrans, Compton, which has now been defaced multiple times. Sloe Motion forwarded extra large size IG posted about the mural and commented on the post, writing: “I’m one of the artists who painted this mural and the person who blackened Kendrick’s face actually made it worse Oops.
Back in November, they shared an IG Reel that included security footage of a vandal destroying a mural and referenced the song “wacced out murals” with the caption:
“A few months ago, our Kendrick mural was attacked. Of course, we were angry and wanted to fix it, but it just got worse. Fast forward to today, and Kendrick sang a song about the situation song. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s all good, but it does feel good to have the hard work we do for our community immortalized in a song by one of the greatest of all time. Thank you @kendricklamar for making this day. The situation is better.
When Barrera was interviewed above, advertising billboard on her involvement in Lamar’s surprise album and being invited by Norice to appear on his upcoming YouTube series art and soul Focus on murals
“The artist who created that painting spoke to me. His name was Mike Norris,” she told the deputy editor spanish advertising billboard Siegel Ratner-Arias was not interviewed. “I don’t know if you know what happened when he painted that painting, it was scratched, it was vandalized, from Kendrick’s last album, so Kendrick made the song “Wacced Out Murals” , the first album I had a song on.
Added: “Then the artist invited me there. It was a very good thing because we were connected in some way, we had something in common. The artist who created the painting made a documentary and soon It’s going to come out. It’s pretty cool to be there because we have something in common with Kendrick.
