saturday night live Musical guest Hozier closed out the season on Saturday night (December 21) with his hit “Too Sweet” and a cover of The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” on the Martin Short-hosted episode.
After being introduced by Short, Hozier performed his 2024 chart-topping single “Too Sweet,” which he played on his breakout single “Take Me to Church” (which he played on during his music career ) took off 10 years later. saturday night live Debuted in 2014.
“Too Sweet” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as the Pop Airplay and Rock & Alternative Airplay charts earlier this year. It ranked No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 year-end chart.
Later in the show, the Irish singer-songwriter, his backing singers and his band performed an energetic rendition of “Fairytale of New York” – a song recorded by The Pogues in 1987 with band member Shane MacGowan Swap lead vocals with Kirsty MacColl for a duet. (MacGowan sadly passed away from pneumonia last year, and MacColl died in a tragic boating accident in 2000.)
During Saturday night’s show, a small change was made to the lyrics, with the ballad’s original slur replaced by the line “You’re cheap, you’re haggard.”
This performance was a great addition to the Saturday Night Live holiday lineup. Earlier this week, Hozier was in rehearsals filming some festival promos with Short and Keenan Thompson. Short humorously complained about the decor and the script, and discussed holiday festivities with Hozier at another game.
“Martin, don’t you love Christmas?” Thompson asks in the film. “Well, actually, I prefer to celebrate the ancient Roman holiday Saturnalia, so Christmas is just ‘Wednesday’ to me,” Short replied. “Fellow Saturn?” Hozier quipped.
