This week’s throwback preview is the 1985 animated holiday special The life and adventures of santa claus It was created by Rankin/Bass, the same company Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer and Frosty snowman.
The special is adapted from L. Frank Baum’s 1902 book of the same name. This story reveals the unique and fantastical origins of Santa Claus.
The story begins with the Great Ak, the leader of the Immortal Council, telling the story of Klaus’s life, convincing the Council to grant him immortal life. Klaus was born a mortal and was raised by the forest fairy Nesir in the enchanted Forest of Birds.
As Klaus grows up, he learns about human struggles and chooses to dedicate his life to bringing joy and kindness to children. He begins making toys to spread happiness to the world, but faces opposition from the Awgwas, dark creatures who thrive on human misery.
The story is filled with magical and fantastical elements, including immortal creatures, mythical creatures and Klaus’s imaginative backstory.
The visual style and stop-motion animation is typical Rankin/Bass, with intricate designs and a fantastical atmosphere.
While this is a less traditional special than some other Christmas specials, it delivers a heartfelt narrative and captivating presentation.
