In an era of division, superman director James Gunn Believe that his movie and Man of Steel can offer something meaningful…unity.
Gunn’s vision for Superman centered on the timeless values the character represents, including kindness, love, hope and ethics, ideals he hoped would resonate beyond the screen.
The filmmaker shared his perspective in an interview with IGN, acknowledging the heightened polarization in today’s society, often exacerbated by the internet.
“Look, I do think things have become polarized, and my life has not been that way,” he said. “The Internet has become polarizing, and it’s more polarizing than life.
“I live in rural Georgia, and I have friends of all different political persuasions. I’m not someone who thinks someone is excluded because their political views are different from mine.
Rather than falling into divisive rhetoric, Gunn highlights the common humanity that unites us, reflecting the universal desire to make compassionate choices despite the black-and-white narratives often seen online.
“Most of us are trying to do the best we can,” he said. “I think at the end of the day, most of us make the best choices for ourselves and try to do things compassionately.”
He believes Superman embodies values that transcend political differences: “I hope Superman does unite us a little bit, because he’s a core value that I think everyone believes in.
“Not everyone, but almost everyone believes it. Hopefully this goes beyond political discourse in this regard.”
Gunn continued: “If we can just focus on our humanity, which is what Superman is about as a character and as a movie, and focus on doing the best we can every day, then that’ll be a little bit healing, but not a lot.”
first trailer Superman:We’re given a glimpse into the scene, which begins with a tortured Superman calling out for help to his loyal dog Krypton. Gunn explained that the moment was a metaphor for finding comfort in the familiar values the character represents.
“In the beginning of the trailer, Superman wants Krypton to take him home. I think this is a place we can all go home to, to the characters we love, to the simple morals, the simple morals that Superman embodies as a character, Kindness and love.
For Gunn, Superman’s return is not only about reinvigorating the beloved and iconic character, but also about providing a moment of reflection and hope.
“I think it could be a good thing for us,” he concluded. I like Gunn’s take on this.
