The Soft Boys performed an impromptu reunion show as part of Yo La Tengo’s annual Hanukkah residency in New York.
The revamp took place on Saturday (December 28) during the fourth night of Yo La Tengo’s annual holiday event, with Robyn Hitchcock as the opening act.
During the 16-song show, Softboys’ Kimberley Rew performed a version of “The Race is on Again,” and during the encore, Rew joined his former bandmates Hitchcock and Morris Windsor returns to the stage together.
Rue’s partner Lee Cave-Berry played bass on five songs, opening with “Queen of Eyes” and finishing with “I Wanna Destroy You” as the penultimate track. In addition, the band also covered Eric Von Schmidt’s “Baby, Let Me Follow You Down”, The Velvet Underground’s “Run Run Run”, and ended with the Beatles’ “It’s All Too Much”.
The Soft Boys originally formed in 1976 and released two albums – 1979’s jar of bees and the 1980s Underwater moonlight – before breaking up in 1980. Known for the song “Walking on the Sun”.
The band reunited in 1994, then reformed for two years in 2001, releasing their final album, Paradise next door. Bassist Matthew Seligman, who succeeded founding member Andy Metcalfe in 1979, will pass away in 2020.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time members of The Soft Boys have performed together recently, with Rue, Cave-Berry and Windsor also performing with Hitch on select dates during his UK tour in August and September Multiple shows.
