Alternative folk duo The Lumineers have announced the release date for their upcoming fifth studio album. automaticwill be released on Dualtone on February 14th. The Denver band, consisting of singer/guitarist Wesley Schultz and drummer Jeremiah Fraites, previews their 2022 follow-up bright side on Tuesday (January 7), along with “Same Old Song,” the upbeat first single from the record.
“Hey, mom, will you pay my rent/Would you let me crash into your basement/Because any one of us could make a big deal out of it or end up dead on the sidewalk/If I die/If the plane Crash and you survived,” Schulz sings over Frates’ insistent metronome rhythm.
The song then soars to wistful, aching peaks in the chorus, as Schulz enthuses: “Same old songs/We sing the same old songs/We sing the same old songs.” The song’s release Accompanied by a video directed by filmmaker Anaïs LaRocca (Baishui), the two perform on a soundstage with an evocative VHS video in the background that echoes the lyrics.
In a statement announcing the album, Schultz said the album marked the 20th anniversary of his songwriting collaboration with Fraites. “The album explores some of the absurdities of the modern world, such as the increasingly blurred lines between what is real and what is not, and the various ways in which we numb ourselves as we try to combat boredom and overstimulation,” he said, noting The LP recording took “less than a month”.
The statement added that the album would find the duo “traveling through new sonic and thematic territory with their most original and personal collection to date.” It noted that the song was produced by the Woodstock, New York-based producer /Recorded by songwriter/keyboardist David Barron, who “outfitted Woodstock’s Utopia Studios like the legendary Abbey Road facility, installing both vintage and cutting-edge gear,” the pair There were performances of the song “as a whole, with even less opportunity to fix bugs or improve the sound.”
To capture the magic of the scene, they outfitted the studio with two drum sets, three pianos, and an array of amplifiers, guitars, and vocal mics, “allowing the musicians to spin and capture as much as possible with minimal latency.”
The Lumineers are set to kick off the tour with an iHeartRadio ALTer EGO show at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on Saturday (January 11), followed by their own headlining show at Fallsview Casino Resort in Ontario on February 16 Province held in Niagara Falls.
