Is Fox’s new medical drama “The Doctors” striking gold?
If you’ve been following our coverage over the years, you know how much we love medical dramas, especially Fox’s late, great “The Resident.”
You’ve certainly covered a lot of this over the years. But as we all know, The Resident was my precocious little kid, and it delighted me on its journey. Nothing can compare.
After it ended, it was hard to imagine Fox coming up with another medical drama that captured people’s hearts in the same way, but when Fox cast Molly Parker, Scott Wolff and Ami in Doctors Who am I to turn away when La Vane dangles in front of us?
If you read our Doc Series premiere review , you know that the new show is a character-centered primetime soap opera set in the halls of a Minneapolis hospital, and The show leans towards soap opera HARD.
There’s nothing wrong with that. The drug is a useful backdrop for the real reason viewers are likely to watch the show: amnesiac Amy’s chaotic professional and personal life.
What about that time? We stand firm, especially in light of nighttime television’s most beloved love triangle inspired by daytime soap operas.
But who is Amy worth pursuing? Let’s break down Amy’s choice because our girl’s choice is delicious!
Jack Heller was the cutest character in the premiere
Gryffindor scores more! Jack must be a Gryffindor, right?
Jake’s situation is what happened to all the characters surrounding Amy during the premiere. He became the most lovable and compelling person.
Jake is Amy’s advocate, he sees her talent and seems to genuinely love her, scars and all.
He likely only met Amy after her tragedy, so he has no preconceptions of who she used to be and doesn’t want her to return to those warm, fuzzy days.
Jack is a truly delightful guy and an advocate for decency within the framework of the entire premiere’s work. He knows how others view Amy, but he understands another side of her and supports her as much as possible.
The premiere was down a lot, almost as much as Amy was, and she had room to process some of it, but Jack was in a very interesting situation.
It’s hard not to pay attention to him and sympathize.
“Doc” has a great cast and the characters are all interesting. Apart from Amy, Jack is the best, most transparent, and most “knowable” of the group.
Michael Hamda genuinely cares about his ex
From the moment we learn that Michael is not only Amy’s boss but also her ex-husband, it’s enough to pique anyone’s interest.
Flashbacks show how wonderful their life together was, enough to make you wonder and even mourn how they got to this point in their estrangement.
However, Michael said something crucial when he admitted to Amy that, aside from their divorce, he was and had always been her friend.
Given some of the politics at the hospital and the secret life he might have had at home with a mysterious pregnant woman and their teenage daughter, it’s easy to believe Michael when he says that.
His love for Amy hasn’t faded, and even when he’s trying to be professional at work and admonish her bedside manner, you can feel it come from genuine caring.
Jack is head over heels for Amy these days, but Michael is still deeply in love with her. The connection the two share in this way, which the series hasn’t even begun to fully explore, is interesting.
Female-centered May-December romances are all the rage (and still groundbreaking)
Whether adapted into books, feature films or some of our favorite series, exploring romance through older women’s search for love, sex and connection with younger men has always been an exciting new development.
We have normalized the opposite, but for the following reasons completely Nothing to do with sexism (no, no sir), it often remains taboo when people view women over 40 as complex, desirable, sexy women and objects of desire, especially attractive younger ones Man, this makes people uncomfortable man.
Doc lightheartedly teases this with Amy and Jack’s secret relationship. Not only do we see a spicy connection between them, but there’s real love behind it too.
The Doctor doesn’t let viewers write it off as the two of them exchange “I love yous” in a casual and charming way that makes you smile and then breaks your heart as it all unfolds.
Jack’s love for Amy is palpable.
So does his pain when he and she don’t remember him and have no one to turn to for their secret relationship.
Jake does most of the work of carrying this side of the love triangle, since Amy doesn’t remember their connection but still likely felt something in their little moments.
We don’t know much about their romance yet, but enough to recognize that Jack is a worthy contender for Amy’s heart and support the idea that they can and maybe should find their way back to each other.
Amy and Michael’s chemistry is electric and multi-layered
Maybe it’s because we see Amy and Michael in various stages of their relationship in multiple timelines in the premiere. Still, their chemistry feels natural and crackles in every scene they share.
Throughout the episode, their chemistry felt alive and drew a lot of attention, as it was clear they were connected in so many ways.
It feels like there are many layers to this particular love story to unravel as we come to understand the tragedy and how they chose how grief tore their marriage and family apart.
Michael and Amy have an obvious and rich history, and Doc is ready to explore it. The more time we spend with these characters and understanding their connections, the more likely it is that one side of their love triangle will be the one the audience ends up rooting for.
McRizz vs. Sexy Silverfox: The Best Choice Is…
Look, when it comes to shipping, if the storyline and chemistry are right, I fully admit that I’m a fair-weather shipper who isn’t afraid to jump ship.
I’m also willing to change my mind as the season progresses. Amy has some good ones (I mean wonderful) option, she can’t go wrong.
But if I had to choose now, it would be Michael.
The chemistry between Molly Parker and Omar Metwali is too good to pass up.
When they were deeply in love in flashbacks, tense pre-amnesia, and now in this fascinating state of longing, compassion, and uncertainty, one wouldn’t think it would be difficult for them to succeed in the various stages of their relationship.
Amy and Michael’s love story is so layered and tragic that it makes you root for them to find their way back to each other.
The loss of their child and grief drove them apart. Their devastating life events make you sympathize with both sides. It captures the desire to derive some hope from darkness.
Amy and Michael has the potential to be a beautiful second chance at on-screen romance, combining two aspects: former true lovers reconnecting and a midlife love story.
We also don’t often let those love stories take center stage. Frankly, this girl is a fool to them!
Jake seems very cute, sweet, and charming, but the allure of Amy and Michael’s rich, complicated, messy history, and the possibility of them reconnecting romantically again despite everything (and everyone) that’s happened, is The stuff of romance novels or truly great soap operas.
I’m all for these two, but only time will tell if I’m willing to fully stick to that “ship.”
In the meantime, let us hear your thoughts, Doc Fanatics! How do you feel about this love triangle?
