2024 western movies bush is an almost hidden gem. With little marketing and streaming flying under the radar, it could slip from sight.
behind the camera
Directed by Eli Ole Lester from a screenplay by Chris Kelly and Joe Lansdale based on Lansdale’s novel of the same name. bush Be strange, eccentric and violent. It’s getting dark too. Guillermo Garza’s cinematography ensures that every frame is illuminated by winter’s half-light. There is little sunshine and many clouds. Most exterior scenes look dirty and dark.
Editor Jean-Christophe Bouzy brings everything together with a strong artistic flair. Nothing inappropriate here. Production Design and Art Direction: Justin Ludwig and Edward Smith Taylor respectively effectively transport us into that era.
story
After John and Lula’s parents died of smallpox, the Parker family began to move. On their way to Kansas City, they unfortunately encountered the gangster Bill and her gang. After they meet, Grandpa dies, Lula is kidnapped, and John falls into a coma.
Reginald Jones and Eustace Hollow bumped into John as they were running away from a gang trying to shoot them. The three team up to rescue Lula from Bill.
This proved to be a difficult task.
main actors
Peter Dinklage plays Jones.
Juliette Lewis plays Bill.
Levon Hawke is John.
Esme Creed-Miles stars as Lula.
Gbenga Akinagbe is not following anyone.
Leslie Grace plays Jimmy Sue.
Dinklage and Lewis soar in their roles here. All the actors manage to knock it out of the park. Dinklage has no trouble convincing Lewis, and Lewis’ performance as the deranged killer is truly unpleasant. She is, in a word?
Terrible.
Hawke, Creed-Myers, Grace and Akinnagbe bring a lot of authenticity to their characters, as do the rest of the cast.
a small question
However, there is one small problem with this movie. During the gunfight scene, no one reloads. Granted, there is one scene where someone actually runs out of ammo, but, that’s the exception.
It’s a busy movie
there’s a lot going on bush. There were two kidnappings. There were multiple shootings involving some of the best performers along the Mississippi River. Good Westerns are hard to find these days. This movie with its unlikely cast of anti-heroes feels legitimately like, say; Unforgiven. bush It has a lot in common with Eastwood’s last western, which is also bleak.
It’s cold
bush It is a movie set in winter. Each character’s breath puffs out white smoke. The weather is very cold. Jones and Beal are on different levels of aloofness. Some scenes are so violent as to be cringe-worthy. Almost every protagonist will resort to extreme violence without reservation when the need arises.
Backstory
Both protagonists have revealing backstories. Jones worked with Annie Oakley. Bill became mentally unstable after her equally distraught mother tormented her. Even Jimmy Sue was tricked into going west.
Judgment
bush Clearly, this is a movie that Dinklage loves. The cast, script and crew have created a fantastic Western here. The film received a solid 5-star rating. It’s now streaming for free on Tubi.
