Karen y Los Remedios Becomes Charming Rising Star of Latin Indie Music with Nine Debut Albums in 2023 silencea darkly poetic fusion of eerie cumbia rhythms and subtle trip-hop influences. Comprised of singer-songwriter Ana Karen Gonzalez Barajas, producer Jonathan “Jiony” Muriel and guitarist Guillermo Berbeyer, the trio offers a mesmerizing exploration of themes of grief, loneliness and mystical contemplation.
Among its tracks, “Las Muchachas” is particularly noteworthy, highlighting the band’s penchant for experimental cumbia-pop fusion. Lyrical depth is conveyed through lines such as "When you tell me I’m out of reach, I think of the stars” (“When you tell me I’m out of reach, I think of the stars”).
The Mexican Sound Institute, led by Camilo Lara, has reinterpreted the song in an innovative way. The Mexico City DJ/producer retains the haunting charm of the original while infusing the vocals with spatial sound and sheen. Additionally, he adds a reggae dub vibe and catchy Middle Eastern riff midway through, turning the mix into an immersive experience that respects the core of the original while introducing dynamic aural layers.
Lara is known for her ability to blend traditional Latin sounds with exploratory electronic elements and cheesy Mexican ballads. In addition to his projects with the Instituto Mexicano del Sonido, Lara is involved in the ensemble Mexrrisey and has composed numerous scores and film scores (mexican drug lord, cocoa).
Karen y Los Remedios’ “Las Muchachas (Mexican Sound Mixing Institute)” will be part of the trio silence mixwill be released on April 11th.
