HYBE’s brand ADOR filed a preliminary injunction against the Korean pop music group NewJeans in an attempt to prevent the group’s members from conducting independent activities without the company’s approval.
The legal action has been filed with Seoul Central District Courtfollowing a previously filed lawsuit i like it On December 3, 2024, the company sought confirmation with new jeans member.
ADOR is now seeking to protect its position as the group’s exclusive management agency, the brand said MBW in a statement.
ADOR cited court documents saying NewJeans members had attempted to unilaterally terminate the contract and began pursuing independent promotional agreements with advertisers.
“Such actions lead to confusion and potential harm to third parties, including advertisers,” the brand said, acknowledging that legal action “may take a considerable amount of time.”
“In order to resolve the immediate matter and prevent further disruption, ADOR was forced to apply for an additional injunction,” the statement read.
The injunction is intended to maintain the current relationship between ADOR and NewJeans until the court makes a final decision on the original lawsuit.
Before filing the lawsuit in December, ADOR had earlier stressed that NewJeans had no reason to terminate its exclusive contract and that the contract remained “in full force and effect.” The statement was in response to a press conference held by the organization on November 28, 2024, in which member Hanni said ADOR had “neither the ability nor the will to protect” NewJeans.
“Remaining in an institution will only prolong our psychological suffering and waste our time.” Hanni cited in Korea JoongAng Ilbo As it was said at the time.
NewJeans members stand aside Heejin’s thoughtsThe former CEO of ADOR and creative director of NewJeans was involved in a conflict that became public last spring when HYBE accused Min of trying to wrest control of ADOR from the parent company by selling company stock and leaking confidential information.
Recently, ADOR said it remained committed to supporting NewJeans despite the ongoing legal dispute. The company said it will continue to provide the necessary resources and facilities to the group and believes their exclusive agreement remains valid.
The record company said the case could set a precedent for South Korea’s entertainment industry. ADOR believes that allowing artists to unilaterally terminate exclusive contracts without due legal process could discourage investment in K-pop and “undermine the foundations of the K-pop industry.”
The label added: “ADOR has received external proposals for various projects, such as advertising and promotional campaigns, and has finalized event plans for this year, including the release of studio albums and fan meetings. ADOR has stated that with these plans progress, it intends to fully communicate with NewJeans members.
