The 2024 Academy Awards won Outstanding Variety Special (Live) on the first night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. It’s the first time Oscar has won an Emmy for Outstanding Variety Program since 1991, when the award’s predecessor category was Outstanding Variety, Musical or Comedy Program. Prior to this, Oscar had won the top program award in 1979 and 1988.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards will be performed over two consecutive nights at LA Live’s Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles. The first ceremony on Saturday (September 7) was mainly about improvisational and documentary programs. Sunday’s ceremony will focus on scripted programming.
Rickey Minor won the Outstanding Musical Direction Award for his work at the Academy Awards. It was his third win in the category, following Taking the Stage: African American Music and Stories That Changed America (2017) and Kennedy Center Honors (2020). He was also nominated for his work in the 46th Annual Kennedy Center Honors.
The Oscar also won two other Creative Arts Emmys – Outstanding Directing for Hamish Hamilton and Outstanding Production Design for a Variety Special. These four awards bring the total number of Emmy Awards won by Oscar to 63.

Henson, who died in 1990 at age 53, won five Grammy Awards and three Primetime Emmy Awards. Additionally, he was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1987.

An edited version of the two-night Creative Arts Emmy Awards will air on FXX on Saturday, September 14 at 8pm PT. The show will then air on Hulu from Sunday, September 15 to Wednesday, October 9.
The 76th Emmy Awards will air live on ABC from the Peacock Theater on Sunday, September 15 from 8-11 pm ET/5-8 pm PT. The broadcast will be available on Hulu the following day.
