With a ban on TikTok looming in the United States, Charlie Puth is saying goodbye to his TikTok fans.
The hit singer shared a video of herself playing the piano on the platform. With the camera to the side of the keyboard, Puth lost himself wordlessly in the mellow arrangement of his and Wiz Khalifa’s 2015 smash “See You Again,” which spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 , adding melancholic chords to accompany the song’s bittersweet melody.
“Goodbye TikTok,” he wrote in the caption. “Although this is not goodbye…”
In the comments section, Puth teased: “I’ll be back soon.”
In the comments, fans of the musician also agreed that the performance made them feel. “Charlie you know this will make everyone cry,” one person wrote, while another fan added, “Charlie this will actually make me break down.”
Puth published this article on the same day that the Supreme Court voted to uphold a federal regulation that will effectively ban TikTok in the United States starting as early as Sunday (January 19). The government initiated the ban over national security concerns related to parent company ByteDance’s Chinese ownership, and the company argued to no avail that the ban violated First Amendment protections of free speech.
One hope for the app’s future may be that President-elect Donald Trump, who took office on Monday (January 20), has vowed to “negotiate a resolution” to save it. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew personally called on Trump to block the ban, saying in a statement after the Supreme Court ruling that he was “grateful and pleased to have the support of a president who truly understands our platform.”
Meanwhile, Puth isn’t the only star to say goodbye to TikTok. Kesha also shared a tongue-in-cheek farewell to the app this week, pairing a video of herself staring blankly into the camera with her 2009 smash hit “Tik Tok,” writing, “TikTok may be temporary , but TiK ToK is forever.
