It’s no secret that the future of Hawaii’s beaches could look decidedly different.
Rescue HI-Surf has a big changing of the guard on this Hawaiian beach, Sonny is retiring and Em is taking his place.
Sonny officially announced the news on HI-Surf Season 1, Episode 10. What does this mean for Em and the continuation of the show?
Ever since HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 1, Sonny has wanted to stop being in charge of lifesaving on the beach.
He does a great job and people trust and respect him. But he also experienced a lot of heartbreak at work.
Everyone dreams of retiring, but when your job is tied to sad memories and you have someone waiting to replace you, the decision is easier.
Or so we think.
It was not an easy decision for Sonny to make, and I still wonder if he would actually do it.
He’s on the cusp of a new chapter in his life, but he doesn’t seem excited about it.
I can’t be the only one who has read about how miserable retirement can be, but when your job is literally saving lives, I imagine hanging around the house can be pretty unfulfilling.
Then there’s Em, who longs for increased responsibility, but not to the point where she’s willing to make informed decisions.
Entering a romantic relationship with an engaged ex is irresponsible, especially when a promotion comes with a balance of power with the person you love.
In TV Fanatic’s exclusive Rescue HI-Surf trailer, no one seems happy with Sonny’s statement.
Of course, there’s the expected applause of congratulations, but like a smile it doesn’t reach your eyes.
Unless you’re Will, who doesn’t even bother pretending.
The look on his face said a lot, but since he knew she’d been pushing for a promotion, that couldn’t be the reason.
Instead, I think the news took him out of the moment—a moment that put Em back in his arms before he had a chance to think about his fiancée.
Rescue HI-Soft uses a pun in its title.
“Riptide” may speak directly to their recent preservation, but also to their relationship.
Vocabulary.com defines a riptide as an extremely strong, unpredictable current of water flowing past another.
Sonny, Em, and Will are all trapped together by Sonny, who is retiring, and her love life.
