Matt Loehr (Matt Loehr) It is no stranger to the stage. Has a 27 -year career, full of dazzling Disher in the Broadway performance. Mooremen Sutra and EvitaEssence At present, he has brought huge laughter to audiences across the country in the Broadway musical “National Tour Concert” Some like it is hotEssence
When the show was on Broadway, I saw the performance, and I couldn’t say enough to this. The show comes from its high -energy faucet and attractive songs, which is a love letter for old -fashioned musicals.
LOEHR spent some time to talk about the show. His whirlwind audition process and entered such a fast -paced, laughing spectacle. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. For a complete interview, watch the video above or view our YouTube page.
How long has your tour?
Matt Loehr: In fact, we are now four months. We have been in SChenectady, New York since mid -September.
Like you, at SCHENECTADY.
Matt Loehr: Well, you know, this is very interesting, for example, “Really, Schenectady?” But now, almost every tour can be performed. Because this is a good place for technical performance. Not far from New York. This is a gorgeous theater with good space. Therefore, this is a good starting point before starting to go to the theater with more limited space.
I watched the show at Broadway and I like every second. marvelous. Do you have a chance to see the performance before being asked to audition?
Matt Loehr: Yes. I went to see it. When the show opened for the first time in Broadway, I performed.
I have chores with the director Casey Nicholaw Over the years several times. A few of my friends are in the performance, so I am very excited about this.
This is one of the first performances after COVID. They not only bring Broadway back, but also bring the old schools, large numbers, and have the sensitivity of this 21st century in culture. I think this is great.
Therefore, when I got off the car, I knew, one, I wanted to see it to support it, and I also know Christian BorleIt is very suitable for me. So I thought, “I need to see this a bit.”
As an actor, you want to see what may be suitable. Therefore, I have two tasks and absolutely fall in love with it. It’s exciting. It was also after Tonisia, so everyone was very high. I know I have bias now, but anyway.
I am also an actor. Whenever I go to the show, I will say, “Oh, I can play this role.” I think I am always scouting.
Matt Loehr: Oh, yes, of course. I will do everything for everything, because I mean, I am not a spring chicken. I have been doing this for 27 years. In order to continue, it requires a certain number of madness and perseverance, and I continue to look forward to it in a way.
I don’t know if you have this feeling, but I really think I can still enjoy one. You know, when I go to see it, I can really, like sitting down and watching all. This is what I did in that performance. Then, what I want to say is, “Oh, yes, this is good for you. Well, very good.”
From the moment you see the performance, you can find out how your role is like you?
Matt Loehr: I am lucky because I work with Casey again and work with other people in the team. My agent is very interested in my tour. They quickly tracked my last day to the audition.
I actually and MJ, musicalDuring this time, we were in Costa Mesa in Costa, so I just flew out an audition and made all the materials they wanted. They asked me to stay and read the potential of me, that is, Gerry/ DAPHNE role. Then a few days later, I was called and got part. Like this, it is great.
I have to make eight auditions. This is a very beautiful moment, when you feel correct. Then they felt: “Yes, we think you are right.”
Then you can deliver the goods, just like, “Okay, I don’t think you need to do one or more.”
I think that when you arrive at San Diego, it will have a huge reaction because many of them are actually set up at the DEL hotel.
Matt Loehr: I know. I was biting this matter and arrived there for this.
What is rehearsal? You are working with primitive directors, right?
Matt Loehr: Yes. I mean, it is not always the case. We are lucky to be able to participate in Casey most of them.
At the beginning, we rehearsed four weeks in a studio in New York. First of all, the first week is the real material, all choreographers, vocals, because there are too many. For a while, we all felt that we were just hammered. Just like, “Can we sit down and sit down?”
But in fact, it is really meaningful to get it to the top to get all the information. Because at that time we made several changes to the show. This is not a big deal, but like a few lines, a few jokes, they want to do some music switches to improve some things. So it’s really good in the room with them. Max Manman and Scott Whitman It is a composer and a lyricist, their legend, they have been there.
This is really a very interesting experience. I mean, of course, this is very stressful, because you are working hard and tired. And you always want it to make it correct. However, we must feel that it is so cool to build our own company like that.
Then, in the last week of the rehearsal, this is why I think the overload of the top is really smart, we just participated in the performance. The performance we performed in the performance room is more than the performances I performed in the studio. But this is very meaningful because it is so strong.
For everyone, this is a marathon, and you must build your own endurance. They know that once we enter the technology, you will lose about a week because it is only performed according to part. Therefore, it is indeed a great process.
On the first day of rehearsal, do you feel nervous with all these creators?
Matt Loehr: Oh yes. But at that moment, I thought: “I know, I already know. I know these people, I know they support me.”
As an actor, this is really tricky. We always get so troubled in our minds. “Oh, my God, will they like me?” Even in the audition, they always want you to exercise. They Always cheer for you.
In this way, I can really sit in that feeling and walk, “Try to do something and do this.” That was so free and interesting. Now, I definitely know that other newcomers engaged in business are another feeling, because when you step into this business, you must see when you struggle to prove that you and everyone know you. Therefore, this is a different energy. But this is indeed a very grateful energy for me, because this experience makes it comfortable.
What is your fastest change? As far as I remember, your role goes away, and then after a second, you wear wigs and this beautiful clothes.
Matt Loehr: Yes, we have changed some, and we do this on the stage. Just like when you put on your clothes, makeup and all these things, we can dress up the upper numbers like women. That was your nightmare at the beginning. But this is very interesting.
Once you do something, it is very interesting, just like “good”. But at the beginning, you are like, “Jesus, how would I do this work?”
I think the fastest change is after Jerry and I made the first number, “You can’t have me.” We must exit and then become dovetails. This is when we witnessed the murder. And I do think this may be the fastest time because we must complete a short scene.
During the performance, the audience laughed very hard. Just like they couldn’t do anything on the stage because the laughter was so fierce in such a long time.
Matt Loehr: It will never grow old, do you know? Then, of course, you will be spoiled because of these, and then you go to a city, and you don’t. And you are like, what did I do? I am bad. I am resigning.
When you mention yourself, the actors you have worked for work for 27 years. How do you keep the ball rolling for so long?
Matt Loehr: I am fortunate to have excellent mentors. I grew up in Mobile in Alabama, and this is not any form of art of Micia. However, some people are very sensational. They really made me root, trained me, and really helped me realize that if I want to do this, it is a marathon, not a sprint.
I am also very obsessed. I can be the best triple threat to personality. Just like becoming an actor’s whole thing is to explore each of them. Therefore, I play all these extensive roles, and I often look like: “Well, I can do it for a while. Then, with my development, I can do this.”
Of course, this is a great plan, but it is very difficult to actually achieve this goal in a business without disrespect, because they must enter you soon. You know, there are only so many time, only so many people. They are like, “Oh, that person is great. This is the purpose they are always going out.”
However, if you want to continue development and change, you must continue to oppose this. Sometimes you don’t. In my career, I have always been lucky to work. But from the perspective of diversity, it will definitely decline.
I think I don’t have anything else I want to do. You know how difficult it is, it is like the greatest gift ever. Therefore, I just have this, “I never give up, because I don’t know what I’m still doing.”
I did teach, and I did spend two years to teach at the North Carolina Art School. It was from 2014 to 2016. It was literally, and I changed from like a young man to a age. In many ways, I think this helps the work I do from the performance and re -development and the really deep gratitude of the work I still want to do.
Finally, I want to ask the last question of everyone. Do you have the worst audition in history?
Matt Loehr: Oh God, HamiltonEssence This is for the lecture class. I’m doing Mooremen Sutra At Broadway, I know that I left about 18 months later and started this teaching position.
I’m a little tired, I got this audition. Obviously, who knows that this will be its essence, but I do know the people participating in it, which is for the public theater.
At that time, this was for the king. But this is like the king in the ensemble, like a special moment such as a dance ensemble member.
The audition was a treble before the two performances in the morning. I thought, “I think I am okay.” So, I was singing: “The rise of the ocean, the empire falls down …” This is the louder, the craziest nonsense … I just, I mean, this is undoubtedly this undoubted It’s the most embarrassing moment in the room. In some ways, this is a good choice, that is, when you go home or home, I only need to own it. I thought, “So I thought I had it today, but obviously I didn’t, I’m sorry.” But they were very good about it. However, to this day, the most embarrassing audition in my life.
