Looney Tunes has been a staple in animation for nearly a century, bringing audiences timeless humor and memorable characters. Now, in The day when the earth explodes: a Rooney music moviefans finally saw the Pork Pig, Duffy Duck and Petunia Pig as the center stage in their first long-term adventure. The film is a love letter to the golden age of animation, hand-painted and filled with classic farce energy, capturing the essence that has passed down Looney Tunes from generation to generation.
Eric BauzaWho expresses both Filipino and pork, and also speaks out Candi Milowho spoke out Petunia, spent some time talking about bringing these beloved characters to the big screen, seeing the audience embrace the movie, and the huge responsibility to continue Looney Tunes Legacy. Plus, they share their ideas about the magic of hand-drawn animation and why it is still so important in an era dominated by CGI and AI.
I watched the movie with my daughter and they absolutely loved it. I went back to my childhood and the classic Rooney tuned comics.
Eric Bauza: I remember the first time I saw it in the animation was a film festival, with a room full of animation fans and Rooney music fans. But it sounds like, like, we’re like recording a full house or a kid’s marriage, like a sitcom laugh. I was like, wow, people really like this.
Candi Milo: Yes. I saw it in a small theater in Los Angeles when they were having an Oscar show. It was a very small room, so it was like a smaller place, packed. It sounds like a laughing sitcom and everyone laughs. I looked at my daughter, who is an adult, I was looking at her, like, “Did you hear it?” She was like, “I think it’s real. People absolutely love this.
To my surprise, it was like the first independent Looney Tunes movie.
Eric Bauza: Yes, 90 years ago, they were introduced as the Shorts Theater. I mean, if you’re in the theater like you did in the mid-40s to late, if you’re going to drink or popcorn before you get back to the feature, you might be missing out on some of these comics. And, no matter what, it isn’t even like they’re re-entered into the joint organization. This is not a point, it is a comic that lost the slot. So it’s amazing to know that they’ve done so far.
I always say, yes, we talk about these guys and girls, just like we talk about grandparents, you know? It’s like we’ve known them for 90 years.
Candi Milo: I think it’s a movie that brings us into the theater, and it’s hand-painted, and it’s 2D animation. I think it is very important to return to true artisticity and storytelling through color and art in this era of AI. I would love to remove all the kids from AI and go back to hand-painting. As an actor, I would love to see it.
Playing these iconic characters must be a kicker. I mean, when you were a kid, could you imagine these legends?
Candi Milo: I’ve said it, he’s embarrassed, but I’m going to say it again, I just think he’s done a good job. I think one thing that’s so big is because he has such a love for these characters, emotionally, psychologically, he’s just a person. Then, since he was able to do both, in the movie, they were completely separated, but they were a mind.
I just like the fact that he can do well. And since he’s such a fan, I’ll let him talk about it in a shocking way, but he’s so good. I am like a proud parent.
Eric Bauza: Just like she praises June seek I’m the godmother of animation sound Mel Blanc Because it is the blueprint of sound, and the personality and character of these characters.
And we have seen them develop themselves like Duffy. If anything, it goes back to the roots of Daffy, a spiral character, not Chuck Jones’ money, greed, daffy version. This is just my favorite version of Daffy.
I recently read an interview with Eddie Murphy and he said he really didn’t have to think about it when he made his voice. It just came out. How are you two? How long does it take for you to perfect the voices of these characters?
Candi Milo: When I first started, I kept asking, do you like my auditions? What do you don’t like? Give me some play with what you like so I can get into what I need to be. Then we just nailed it and we became them.
Once you figure out the sound and are reading, you are reading the script and your behavior. It’s like the second shot you’re reading, but you’re not really reading. You are seeing the characters in the series and are delivering as if we were cast on the camera.
That’s it. The lines I’m reading become the actor I’m reading. It’s the page, it turns into pork, or it turns into boring, or it turns into whatever. I think that’s why it’s easier for some of us.
And we always say that if you are going to be a voice actor, you have to learn to perform so that you have the ability to dig into the character, and the sound is secondary.
But if you are always that character, the voice will always appear.
“If you are going to be a voice actor, you have to learn the performance so that you have the ability to delve into the skills of the character, and the sound is secondary.”
– Eric Bauza
Eric Bauza: That’s the original sound. Just like Candy, Petunia Fink, who plays the classic character, but she also has enough freedom and enough ability to develop it into her own version of Petunia, which is great.
Now, on the side of the fence, I do have to keep an eye on it because again, I’m not the only one who grew up from these characters and everyone does it. Everyone remembers what Mel Blanc did and I don’t want to turn. I don’t want to do it myself. I want it to be as close to him as possible. But remember, these are the words and scenes that Mel has read.
So you have to doubt and think, well, that’s what the character sounds like, but how will he react? That’s just my memory of all the shorts. I think, I mean, there must be thousands of original shorts, and how god it is, it’s incredible because they know they exist in many different stories.
But I have a reference. I could find those Duffy and pork shorts and draw inspiration from them. Hopefully it resonates with the audience.
Although back to Eddie Murphy and think about people like this Tom KennySpongebob’s voice, he says the best place to say: “We do the character’s voice, they, celebrities, have the character’s voice.” If you’re Eddie Murphy, or Seth Rogen and Chris Rocktheir voices are so unique. I think that’s when I work. Or, if you’re like someone Mike Myers Who can do dialects and play roles because he is a student in the second city. I think that’s how it works, celebrities can step in and want to do stupid voices.
