Michael (Ben Stiller) is a hot-shot real estate developer in Chicago, but he never has time to spend with his family. His sister once claimed that he was incapable of love. When his sister and her husband die in a horrific accident, Michael becomes the sole legal guardian of their four surviving boys and suddenly responsible for their house and farm. Initially, he drove to the small Ohio town where his sister lived, thinking he would just need to sign some paperwork to return to the city, but things were far from that simple.

After the death of a parent, the child becomes almost feral. It takes time for the family service worker (Linda Cardellini) to find them a home, and Michael becomes their sole guardian. He reluctantly takes on this unexpected role, chasing chickens, giving impromptu “wellness” classes, and grappling with his new responsibilities. Michael, desperate to escape his inherited fatherhood, is surprised and amused to discover that his sister is training her sons in ballet. He wondered if that would make them charming enough to be adopted.

The kids didn’t greet Michael enthusiastically at first – and frankly, he wasn’t trying very hard. He had made up his mind: the children had to go and he should get on with his busy life. However, as Michael begins to bond with them, he realizes that the siblings have more to offer than their messy house, chaotic environment, and uncontrolled temper. The film gradually reveals the beautiful process of their connection.

David Gordon Green, along with Ben Stiller and screenwriter Leland Douglas, takes viewers on a journey that creeps up on you. Scene after scene, they construct a story full of humor, unexpected twists and honest emotions that reveals the makings of a new family. Greene does an excellent job of capturing the warm relationships that can develop when a person opens up. As time went by, Michael continued to improve and became less selfish than before. But he had to make a decision, and the kids vehemently didn’t want him to be that decision. Will they find common ground or build a loving and caring family? As the title suggests, expect some unexpected twists and turns that will solidify the beauty of this film in your heart.
