Filmmakers working in short-form documentary have only a few days left to enter the 2026 Bloomberg Green Docs competition, which offers a $25,000 cash grand prize for a short documentary addressing climate change and environmental issues.
Submissions close on 14 August 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time, according to the official competition rules. Eligible films must be no longer than 10 minutes, including credits, and should address topics connected to nature, global warming, the outdoors or the environment more broadly.
The competition is open to eligible filmmakers internationally, subject to the residency and sanctions restrictions listed in the official rules. Entrants must be at least 18, or the age of majority in their jurisdiction, and must have produced or directed the documentary they submit. Team entries are permitted provided all team members meet the eligibility requirements.
Films should either be in English or include English subtitles, including subtitles for end credits. Entrants must also provide a written synopsis when submitting. Films cannot be tied up in exclusive distribution agreements that would prevent Bloomberg from screening them in full at the festival.
What the finalists receive
Up to five finalist documentaries will be selected. Each finalist film is scheduled to screen at the Bloomberg Green Docs Film Festival, and one representative from each finalist project may receive reasonable travel and accommodation support to attend the festival in New York.
The overall winner receives the finalist benefits plus the $25,000 cash prize. Bloomberg says the finalists are expected to be notified around 4 September 2026.
The winner is scheduled to be announced at the Bloomberg Green Docs Film Festival on 22 September 2026 in New York City, where the five finalist documentaries will be shown.
How films will be judged
According to the official rules, eligible documentaries will be assessed on three principal criteria:
- auteur voice
- originality
- potential to create conversation around an environmental topic
The judging period is scheduled to begin after submissions close and continue into early September.
Who should consider applying
This opportunity is particularly relevant to documentary filmmakers with a completed short exploring subjects such as climate change, ecosystems, environmental risk, conservation, changing landscapes or related themes.
Because the maximum runtime is only 10 minutes and the prize is substantial, the competition may also be worth considering for filmmakers who have produced compact environmental documentaries outside the traditional festival circuit.
Filmmakers should review the full eligibility and rights provisions before entering, particularly the sections covering festival screenings, promotional use and existing distribution agreements.
With submissions closing 14 August, eligible filmmakers interested in the competition should complete their entry through the Bloomberg Green Docs submission portal before the deadline.
