This past weekend I had the opportunity to shoot some brand new footage with the URSA Mini 4.6K in beautiful Malibu, California. My wife and I decided to drive to some of our favorite places and do a series of run and shoots, the footage of which has been edited into the video below.
many of you know I’ve shot some footage with URSA Mini 4.6Kbut this time I wanted to shoot mostly in slow motion because I didn’t have the chance to do that last time. Almost everything you see in the film was shot in ProRes HQ at 48fps, although a few shots in the clip were shot in RAW 3:1 at 60p.
Both ProRes and RAW footage look great straight out of the camera, but I decided to shoot at 48 fps in ProRes HQ, mainly to save memory card space. I only had two C-Fast cards with me when shooting, so I couldn’t instantly dump the footage to my laptop. Shooting in ProRes HQ allows me to gain more recording time without sacrificing any quality. In fact, it’s amazing how much latitude and detail this camera captures, not just in RAW files, but in the compressed ProRes format as well.
Since I shoot handheld all day, I want my camera bag to be as light as possible.
I used Blackmagic’s URSA Mini shoulder rig kit to fully set up the top handle, shoulder pads and side grip extensions. While the shoulder kit allows you to use a rail (for a matte box or follow focus), in reality, in order to keep the camera well-lit, I don’t go any further than that. Instead, I kept using a Canon 24-105 lens throughout the shoot and simply screwed on a Tiffin variable ND filter.
To power the camera I used the excellent new Switronix Hypercore SLIM battery, which really helps keep the weight to a minimum while powering the camera for hours.
In the editing room, I used DaVinci Resolve 12 to edit and colorize the footage, and added some film simulation using the Film Convert plug-in inside Resolve.
The film’s music is provided by Art-List, an excellent new music licensing platform that will be launched in the near future. Be sure to check them out at: art list io learn more.
