For a short time, up to 100 Prince fans visiting the music star’s hometown will have a place to stay after an after-party that will drive them crazy about his cultural heritage featured in the film purple rain.
While this white, brown-trimmed two-story home in Minneapolis looks unremarkable from the outside, there’s plenty on the inside to make fans of the late icon appreciate this new, limited-time Airbnb rental excited. The large upstairs closet is covered in paisley wallpaper, there’s leopard print on the floor, and iconic pieces of clothing worn by Prince are displayed behind glass, along with other beautiful pieces for tenants to wear.
“Guests can then actually try on a range of truly iconic ’80s outfits, looks and styles to channel their inner rock star,” Airbnb spokesperson Ali Killam said.
For non-Diamond and Pearl fans, rentals are also affordable—just $7 per person per night for up to four guests. Prices are based on Prince’s favorite number, with a total of 25 nights available over seven weeks from 26 October to 14 December.
The Airbnb rental is a symbol of an era – the 40th anniversary of the film’s release. Prince plays “The Kid,” a musician and band leader who brings his family life to the screen.
The film and hit album of the same name made Prince a superstar with songs like the title track “Let’s Go Crazy” and “When Doves Cry.” Following other hits such as “1999” and “Little Red Corvette,” he sold more than 100 million records that merged genders and genres of rock, funk and soul. He died of an accidental fentanyl overdose on April 21, 2016, at the Paisley Park Estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota, at the age of 57.
The rentals are hosted by Lisa Coleman and Wendy Melvin, two of Prince’s lifelong friends and musical collaborators, on behalf of Airbnb, the late musician’s estate and global media company Warner Bros. Discovery Center.
In the basement of the house, guests can sleep in a replica of The Kid’s bedroom, complete with lavender pillows and even a 1980s-style cassette player. The hotel also has a lounge where guests can play the guitar, drums or upright piano. QR codes placed throughout the home connect visitors to reviews from the hosts.
“It’s really about immersing you in your child’s world,” Killam said.
Of course, there’s plenty of his signature color, purple, in homage to Prince, his career and influence. There’s a large art piece on the wall depicting a purple banana, which Kilham said is a reference to “Let’s Go Crazy.”
You can request a reservation for If You Will Die 4 Prince online on Airbnb from October 2nd at 6am PT to October 6th at 11:59pm PT. Rental invitations will be based on fans’ answers as to why they want to stay there.
