Hosted by Ariana Grande saturday night live Starring for the second time in seven sketches and airing on Saturday night (October 12), the episode appears to have been made for a skilled impressionist.
Grande’s character list saturday night live This weekend: Celine Dion, an aggressive mother, a bridesmaid who crashed her wedding with an “espresso shot,” a tween, one of several Jennifer Coolidges, and a hotel relationship The detective tangles with a noblewoman and a young Italian Renaissance boy with an unfortunate bowl-cut haircut and a falsetto developed in an unfortunate way. Needless to say, she had the opportunity to show some range as a performer. (According to Audience reports, she will also reprise her role as Judy Garland in a “movie classic” segment. The segment was cut for time reasons but was performed during rehearsals.)
After an otherwise non-musical musical monologue – in which the singer-actress sneakily impersonated Britney and Miley while singing a song about something she shouldn’t be singing – Grande continued her performance, welcoming Stevie Nicks serves as the actual musical guest.
Grande’s saturday night live The sketch was a mix of live performance and pre-recorded, and the intensity of live performance didn’t faze her. She giggled once; she fumbled through just one line, and it was a psychotic skit that had lost its charades. She caught herself quickly enough that most people wouldn’t give it a second thought.
Even more memorable is how well she lends her own vernacular to every character, from the iconic Dionne to a film noir heroine filled with absurdly rapid-fire dialogue.
Although eternal sunshine Popular producers have hosted saturday night live Twice now, she’s actually appeared in four different episodes – and since both times she was only booked as a musical guest, she was also written into the sketches. (Remember the surprise Moulin Rouge A spoof from earlier this year?
But for now, let’s focus on Grande’s most recent stint as host.
Here’s where every sketch Grande performed on Saturday night ranked saturday night liveAired on October 12th. Watch all seven sketches below.
-
“Maybelline”
In the sketch, Grande didn’t just play Jennifer Coolidge from the Maybelline commercial—she also played Coolidge’s reflection in the mirror, bringing an extra layer of silliness to the scene. Coolidge, at least that’s what it seemed exist mirror, depicting saturday night live’s Chloe Fineman, who is often the go-to actor to play famous white women when Grande is unavailable. Here, they actually come face to face, and Ariana arguably surpasses Chloe’s impression. Bonus: Dana Carvey has a cameo.
-
“Bridesmaid’s Speech”
In: Bridesmaid Song. Ex: Bridesmaid’s Speech. In this fun wedding reception skit, Grande (alongside Heidi Gardner, Ego Nwodim, and Sarah Sherman) forms a four-member girl group that fuels a TikTok wedding trend of embarrassment.
The bridesmaids sang a personalized song with effortless choreography to the tune of “Espresso,” which tells the story of a bachelorette tossing a “Domingo” to the bride, which got Sabrina Carpenter saying on her Instagram Story: ” It’s very nice and the rhythm is spot on. “We tried it,” Ariana replied. (When you hear Grande’s voice, you’ll notice the sarcasm of their back-and-forth.)
-
“Celine Dion Sports Promotional Video”
Press play and close your eyes and you’ll be transported to Celine Dion’s powerful promo for the UFC. “It’s all in my head, but maybe they can’t recall it because of the concussion, right?” Grande’s Dionne quipped.
Grande’s impression of the diva, which includes a light-hearted (if ridiculous) version of “It’s All Come Back to Me Now,” is enough to fool pop fans. The pre-taped sketch was a parody of Dionne’s actual “Sunday Night Football” promo, swapping the field for an octagon. It works so well thanks to Grande’s special gift of being able to control her voice to sound like anyone she’s ever tried to imitate.
-
“Hotel Detective”
“In those days of dazzling dames and private dicks, big hotels had a plainclothes man on their payroll to deter rowdy patrons. He was known as… hotel detective“. That’s the synopsis for this film noir that gets a little crazy in the form of a live sketch. Grande speaks quickly in a very old-fashioned way, delivering a dazzling amount of dialogue in the two minutes of screen time.
Grande was the woman at the hotel bar who ordered drinks and gave a stern warning not to take advantage of the cheap coffin varnish (it was moonshine). She smoothly says to an unaccompanied guy in a black-and-white photo: “So you’re just a lonely pancake without butter?”
“Oh, bah!” Turns out there’s a twist – of course there’s a twist! Or two! — Grande revealed it with an unexpected giggle when she realized she was holding a prop upside down. She immediately recovered, and anyway, the vignette was usurped by a cue card and somehow it made its way into the picture and onto the TV. Future versions of Hotel Detective should make rogue cue cards a regular fixture.
-
“My best friend’s house”
Petit Grande plays a sweet young teen in this pre-recorded musical sequence as the plot gradually takes a morbid turn.
this saturday night live The host sang a sweet ditty about how much she loved the familiar smells of her best friend’s home, with its cinnamon-scented candles, dinner cooking in the kitchen, and the smell of her brother’s deodorant. “If it smells like this in 20 years, it’ll take me back to this moment,” she sings, hugging the doorframe of his bedroom.
Books on the shelves, throw pillows, wall art and blinds all serve the purpose of backing up the singers. In retrospect, she “missed some pretty big red flags” – giving the final third of the sketch a darkly comedic ending.
-
“guessing puzzles with mom”
this saturday night live Bowen Yang noted on Instagram that the sketch, in which Grande plays a mother, was “based on real events involving Joan Grande.” Joan is Ariana’s mother in real life, and you may have some questions about her after reading this article.
Charades with Mom was co-created with the hilarious Please Don’t Ruin (Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy), who needed more airtime. Although they didn’t appear in the actual skit, their slightly twisted sense of humor was everywhere. Ariana’s demeanor goes from adorable future mother-in-law to a nightmare the first time she plays charades with her son’s boyfriend. The ringtone came from nowhere. Comedy becomes reality. The ending is ridiculous.
-
“Castellati”
Bowl cut. Renaissance ruffled collar. The sound is very, very high. His eyes seemed to say “Help me”. Ariana’s Antonio is an alter ego that will be remembered.
saturday night live Alums Maya Rudolph and Andy Samberg played the parents of Grande’s traumatized Italian boy in the hysterical sketch, in which young Antonio is introduced as “shy” and ” It’s more comfortable to sing.” The audience erupted in nervous laughter as they explained why. The comedy lies in what Grande doesn’t say but what she enforces in her falsetto.
