The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has announced that iconic comic book character Batman will be honored at a ceremony on September 26, making him the first superhero to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The original eight stars were installed on a nondescript stretch of sidewalk at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard. Gower St. and Gower St. in 1960 now stretch 1.3 miles in four directions and contain 2,789 stars. The Batman Pavilion will be the 2,790th and will be located at the prominent corner of Hollywood and Highland, in front of the Guinness World Records Museum.
The announcement stated:
“For 85 years, the Dark Knight has been a symbol of determination, courage and justice for generations of fans. Batman is recognized worldwide for his portrayal in beloved comics, TV shows, cartoons and movies.” He “Has transcended his story to become one of the great American myths. He is the Avenger. He is the Night. He is Batman.”
Unveiling ceremonies for the Walk of Fame are often attended by famous co-stars and friends of the recipient. In this case, that means Jim Lee, DC’s president, publisher and chief executive, and Anne DePies, the company’s senior vice president and general manager.
There are two important reasons for Batman to win this award. First, he became the first superhero to receive a star on the Walk of Fame, a fact recognized by Guinness World Records during a ceremony and reflected in the placement of his star. Secondly, he became the 20th fictional character to have his name permanently imprinted on the Walk of Fame. He will join the likes of Mickey, Minnie, Snoopy and the Muppets.
