Tim Burtonof Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Had some fun with a few different story concepts, but none involved the return of the Maitlands, Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis), from the original film.
They are mentioned several times and we learn that they have found their way to the next plane of existence, which explains why they were not involved in the film. However, the original script for the sequel did include a scene that brought the character back!
screenwriter Alfred Gough recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the version of the script that includes the Maitlands in the new movie. He also revealed why the scene was ultimately cut.
Gough explained: “There is a version [of the script] They show up at the end, but the problem is that they’re ghosts. So they need to look 35, but that’s never going to happen. I think Tim felt, and Miles and I both agreed, that their story had been told. So how do we move forward?
Yeah, there’s really no point in bringing them back. Their story is being told, and their addition only adds to an already confusing and complicated story.
But it’s interesting to see what their original plans were for the character.
