Alejandro Sanz took center stage at Billboard Latin Music Week 2024, participating in an Icon Q&A hosted by Billboard’s Leila Cobo.
Sanz will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 Billboard Latin Music Awards, which will air on Telemundo on October 20. Below, check out some of his memorable quotes from his one-on-one conversations.
On Eternal Success “Broken Heart”: “There are worse things in the world [than singing the song over and over]. Imagine if they didn’t ask you for anything [songs]? I have a lot of respect for my songs. I’ve never complained about one of my songs, let alone that one. I will always be grateful.
On his writing process today: “I no longer lock myself away 14 hours a day. It’s nice to share, I love working in a team. When I want to convey something, I go deep inside. I want to take some of the history and tension out of the song. I love working with those Taking me to another place to work with and get some fresh air.
About his new song “Palmeras en el Jardín”: “It’s a story about love, about wanting to change everything in your life, to make someone feel comfortable. You think you’ve done a lot by planting the palm trees, but in the end it’s not enough and you keep all the Palm trees, and she was left alone. That’s what the song is about.
On his mental health: “I once wrote some articles about my mood [on ‘X’] When I woke up in the morning I was overwhelmed. It really helps. I always wake up in a good mood…everything goes for me and I love life. What I felt that day was not sadness, not anxiety, but an emptiness, a hole in my chest, and it was scary. [I got out] You have to do your part with the help of professionals.
On passion for music: “You have to want to make music and then people will like it. Today, people have a lot of confusion about music. It has to be colorful and diverse. Imagine a city with only one color? The beauty lies in the colors, the differences texture. This is music, this is what I want to do with my life.
In his Netflix documentary: “They thought I was going to tell everything, but I didn’t. It’s going to be a lot of fun. We’re really happy with this team and how we found a path that we all like. You can talk about everything… Talking about how things are doesn’t Fear. The important thing is that everything has a lesson and is useful for something.
On being a businessman and an artist: “Being a businessman, being a composer and being a musician are not mutually exclusive. To be a businessman you have to be a bit of a jerk or a bit witty. I admire artists who can do that, but I don’t Can’t do it.
