Billy Joel and Jason Bonham teamed up to perform Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love” to ring in the new year in style.
Joel’s end-of-year performance at UBS Arena in Long Island on Tuesday (December 31) was extra special for a number of reasons. Not only did the night kick off with Jason Bonham’s “Led Zepellin Evening,” but over the course of the lengthy set, the veteran musician dished out a ton of the night’s fan favorites , as well as some rare tracks from his extensive collection.
While few have heard of 1982’s A Room of Our Own, even rarer is 1974’s Souvenir, which has been performed only 13 times in the past 40 years.
However, one of the most famous songs of the night was not Joel’s own. A little more than a third of the way through the show, Joel shifted focus and welcomed Bonham and his band to the stage to perform 1969’s “Whole Lotta Love.”
“We’re going to have a guest on stage to perform the next song,” Joel told the crowd. “We had a lot of fun, especially with this guy. Welcome Jason Bonham. You all know this song. It’s not a piano song.
Bonham played drums on the song that his father helped make famous more than fifty years ago, and on which Joel’s longtime guitarist and singer Mike DelGuidice sang lead vocals, Put Joel in context in a way.
It’s not unusual to hear Joel perform “Whole Lotta Love” (in fact, he also performed the song at the previous New Year’s Eve celebration at the same venue), and it blended seamlessly into the rest of the show, which also featured Performing “Start Me Up” by the Rolling Stones, and “Layla” by Derek and the Dominos to pass the time before the countdown to midnight.
The show also caps off a big year for Joel, who not only concludes his record-breaking ten-year Madison Square Garden residency ($266.7 million in ticket sales from 1.9 million tickets across 104 shows), but also releases “Turn the Lights Back On” – his first new ballad single in nearly 20 years.
