Brazil opts for new features from Walter Salles, I’m still here Representing the country in next year’s Best International Film Oscar race, Salles was nominated for the same category 26 years ago for his 1998 international breakthrough, central station.
I’m still herePremiering in Venice last month and having its North American premiere in Toronto, it is Salles’ first Brazilian feature in 16 years and one of his most personal works to date.
The book tells the story of the family of Rubens and Eunice Paiva and their experiences under the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985. was a close friend of Salles, who spent much of his childhood at home with his five siblings, Paiva. Father Rubens Paiva was a Brazilian congressman who opposed the dictatorship. In 1971, he was arrested, tortured and killed by the authorities. Left alone, Eunice is forced to reinvent herself and try to put her shattered family back together.

Brazil has been nominated four times for the Academy Award for Best International Film, but has yet to win.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the 2025 Oscar nominees on December 17.
