That’s what Cooper Skinner and his team found out while working on a project that demanded African-American voices. They simply couldn’t find a good sound library – so they decided to create their own extensive Black Walla sound library.
They do this – as a bonus, you can get a free package of sound effects from the library! Get the story and voice below:
wE wants to share the journey behind our Black Walla Pack (currently with you for special discounts for you. It’s an adventure and we’re excited to give you a behind-the-scenes look at how everything comes together.
It all started with us working on a project and hitting the wall. We are looking for authentic African American voices to bring our characters to life, but have been empty. The vast majority of the commercially available Walla are English/Caucasian. That’s the moment when we have a light bulb: If we can’t find what we need, why not create it yourself?
That’s the moment when we have a light bulb: If we can’t find what we need, why not create it yourself?
A few months later, we set up a studio in Atlanta. We approached the local voice performance community and found eight very talented people – four women and four men. We specifically selected actors with different voices to fill in the frequency spectrum and then considered how sound designers use these recordings.

Prepare
This simple “explosion” verbal prompt can dynamically adjust the emotional intensity of the performance without interrupting the flow of the action
During the recording session, we faced some interesting challenges. Sometimes emotions merge together in ways we didn’t expect, requiring some immediate problem solving, such as providing performers with alternative tips or specific vocal instructions. But these obstacles will only make the final product more interesting and versatile.

The series features a wide variety of vocal tracks including male-only, female-only and mixed ensemble recordings. Many files make up different starts, middles and ends that facilitate seamless editing in your DAW.

Technically, we record in mono, stereo and LCR (left center right) formats. LCR records can actually be divided into three separate sections. We think this may be useful for sound designers who want to mix and match to create new sound layers.

All recordings were done in a dry studio. We made this choice, giving sound designers the flexibility to add their own space treatments in post-production, whether it’s outdoor blows, room reverbs, or any other effect. We recommend using plugins like Cargo Cult’s Slapper and various ambient sounds to create your own scenes.
Looking to the future
As we put all of this together, we start thinking about the future. We are fascinated by the potential applications of this kind of data in AI algorithms. With the development of voice synthesis technology, we believe that such a real sample is crucial to the development of more natural and diverse AI sounds.
We would love to know your experience with Walla recordings. What challenges do you face if you worked with them before? What kind of Valas do you wish for? Your insights can help shape future projects.
Thank you for letting us share our story with you. We are excited to see how sound and Walla recordings can grow in the future and we are excited to be part of this journey.
