Earlier this month, Drake lashed out at former Toronto Raptors and current Sacramento Kings star DeMar DeRozan β a Compton native who appeared in the “Not Like Us” video β and Scoffed the idea of ββthe Raptors retiring his No. 10 jersey.
“If you put up a DeRozan banner, I’m going to go up there and take it down,” Drake said on the air the night Vince Carter’s No. 15 jersey went up to the rafters.
second season 7 p.m., Brooklyn Returning on Tuesday (November 12), Melo and Carmelo Anthony welcome the episode’s new co-host, recently retired NBA basketball player Rudy Gay.
“I think Drake was hurt a little bit because of the relationship he built with DeMar in Toronto,” Melo said. “Representing the Raptors Six — you know it has a lot to do with those two guys. From a basketball standpoint, he’ll always be a Raptor. Yeah, that jersey should go up.
Rudy Gay, who played for the Raptors in 2013, chimed in: This is weird, man. Drake is weird in that way…if you feel that way before you’re on camera, you gotta hold DeMar back.
Mello agreed that Drizzy’s comments may have been a bit much. “Drake did a lot when he said I’m going to go out there and tear it down. There’s a lot to that part,” Anthony said, before adding that he understood why Drake was upset. “Those are shots. You, my friend, we’re in the crib, we’re hanging, we’re stacking all six. From that perspective, it makes me angry, too.
The former New York Knick and Gay think Drake and DeRozan should communicate before saying anything publicly on the broadcast to see if they can resolve the issue.
“I would feel it no matter what, but, yes, you do have a conversation. As a man, you have a conversation,” Melo continued.
Gay responded: “As a society, we’re just used to cell phones and cameras and all these things. If you have a problem, come to me. It’s kind of crazy to see your people out there dancing with the enemy.
DeRozan, who spent the first nine years of his career in Toronto, was asked about Drake’s comments after the Kings and Raptors games about his potential jersey retirement. “He still has a long way to go,” DeMar quipped.
Drake and DeRozan were close, but things went awry later when DeMar appeared in Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” video and was featured alongside his fellow Compton star Pop Out concert stage.
Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive defended DeRozan at the next Raptors-Kings game and sat courtside rocking a “They Don’t Like Us” T-shirt and stabbed Drake.
