As the sprawling universe of NCIS reminds us, the folks at CBS love a good spinoff.
So it’s no surprise that the network is developing a new series based on Queen Latifah’s beloved crime drama The Equalizer.
According to Deadline , the show will center on two newcomers to the “Equalizer” universe, both of whom will debut in the show’s sixteenth episode of the season.
The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 4 aired on Sunday, so we’ll have to wait a while.
That’s a good thing, because insiders told Deadline that the two new characters have yet to be confirmed.
The as-yet-unnamed characters are described as “a highly skilled young female martial artist, weapons expert and criminologist with a secret origin story who seeks help from McCall (Queen Latifah), and an older male former senior CIA agent.
The episode isn’t considered an official backdoor pilot, but sources say writers are laying the groundwork for an expansion of The Equalizer.
The show, which premieres in 2021, is a reboot of the series that premiered in 1989.
This version was later adapted into a 2014 film series starring Denzel Washington.
So, yes, the premise of The Equalizer has proven itself to be true.
We think it’s only a matter of time before CBS develops a related series.
After all, as we said before, the current big boss of the network is big Believe in the power of spin-offs.
In addition to current spinoffs Elsbeth, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney and George and Mandy’s First Marriage, more are planned for the near future Derivative Works.
Not one, but two A Fire Nation spin-off is reportedly in the works, and now it looks like The Equalizer has been invited to the party.
Audiences may complain about spin-off fatigue, but the numbers don’t lie.
In fact, CBS was the most-watched broadcast network for several years in a row.
So don’t expect Eye Network to change its strategy anytime soon.
