Ethel Kane expressed her thoughts on the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
The 26-year-old musician took to her Instagram Story on Friday (January 10) to share a quote from former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich discussing the NRA, Big Oil and How powerful groups such as insurance companies influence Congress. “Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction,” he wrote.
Kane added the hashtag “KillMoreCEOs” to the post. In a follow-up Instagram Story, the “American Teen” singer clarified that her intention was not to be reactionary or “edgy.”
“I meant what I said. The company chuckled at the protests,” Cain wrote. “Why would anyone willingly step down from their throne because they spent years easing the suffering of their fellow man? No one is visited by the ghost of Christmas future, no one changes their mind. Quite simply, you let them Fear for your life and then hit them where the only thing hurt is nothing will be done.
Kane summed up her message: “I don’t even understand that this is an incredibly radical idea. It seems so simple to me. ‘Violence is never the answer’ is wrong.” Sometimes it does.
This isn’t the first time Kane has hinted at her thoughts on the death of Thompson, who was shot to death in New York City in December. “Violence begets violence,” she wrote on X around the time of the arrest of suspected killer Luigi Mangione.
Following Mangione’s arrest, it was revealed that the 26-year-old had published a three-page manifesto criticizing the U.S. healthcare system. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to state murder and terror charges, and he also faces federal charges of stalking and murder, which could carry the death penalty, according to police. Kaine has long been outspoken about his political views. After Donald Trump was elected president in 2024, she expressed her anger in Tumblr posts, denouncing the American political system and denouncing the division of the electorate.
“The problem is that America, which has spent decades suppressing its people, leaving them weak and hopeless, is now promising a way out, a path beyond and beyond, by selling out its fellow citizens,” Kaine wrote. “Today, it makes sense. Embarrassingly, a large percentage of white people were outright Nazis as a way to distance themselves from the other carnage around them, even though they were penniless, uneducated, and came from poverty.”
Kaine, an outspoken critic of Republicans and Democrats in the 2024 election, believes modern political discourse fuels widespread hatred and warns that the newly elected president is far from the only problem facing the country.
Kaine also had a direct message to Trump supporters: “If you voted for Trump, I hope peace never comes to you. Instead, I hope it strikes you as clear as a bolt of lightning and makes You spend the rest of your life feeling guilty about what you did and who you are.
