Dionne Warwick has spent decades building her music career. Not surprisingly, she won’t tolerate any bullshit.
The singer rated several pop songs in an NPR segment titled “Nobody Asked This (But I’m Telling You Anyway),” which she shared on Twitter on Friday (September 27) the clip.
Warwick rates each track on a scale of 1 to 5 and has reviewed songs by Chappell Roan, Charli XCX, Kendrick Lamar and Sabrina Carpenter.
Ron’s “Good Luck, Baby!” Warwick noted that it had “almost an ABBA feel” – getting four and a half Dionnis. “She has her own thing to do. It’s a wonderful thing,” she said The Rise and Fall of the Midwestern Princess Breakout star.
Charli’s “Guess” received a respectable four out of 10, and although Warwick isn’t familiar with Kid Summer, she thinks she might be one too. “I probably am,” she said.
Then the next song came on, Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” and Warwick looked somewhat annoyed.
“That’s the ‘why’ look?” Warwick said of Drake’s diss track, and their feud. “I don’t think this should be a public thing.”
“So as far as I’m concerned, I’m not going to judge that,” she added.
Next up, “Please, Please, Please” scored a four-and-a-half out of five at Warwick, but Carpenter’s summer hit “Espresso” did not quite Just right. When asked if the line “I work late because I’m a singer” resonated with her, she looked away and shook her head.
“That doesn’t resonate with me,” quipped Warwick, an industry veteran.
If you’re booking a real idol to sing in front of you at a late-night event, make a mental note to plan a deadline ahead of time.
