Gremlins (1984) is one of the greatest movies of the 1980s. The film was a hit, resonated with fans, spawned a slew of merchandise and continues to be a hit with young audiences. We made a sequel in 1990 called Gremlins 2: The New Batchnot as good as the original, but still fun.
Now fans have an animated series from the original director (Joe Dante) continue to deepen your knowledge of gremlins. The show will premiere in 2022, with the first season titled Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. Season 2 kicked off earlier this month, titled Gremlins: The Wild Batch. There have been rumors about a third film, but maybe the series will continue to tell all the untold stories.
When CinemaBlend asked them if they’d like to see the show continue, or if they’d like to return to live-action to further the mythology, the show’s producers had some interesting answers. Brendan Hay says:
“For myself, it’s kind of selfish, no, just because I do think animation can do more than live action. Like, Joe [Dante] The difficulty of the puppets is explained in detail. Like it’s just the limitations of technology here. We definitely still have limitations. There’s still pencil mileage, there’s still trying not to break your artists and your crew. However, there’s more you can do. Just like we were able to be more free and broad with the type of comedy that we were trying to deliver for the evil Mogwai, beyond the acting, you could actually lean on Gizmo’s very tiny, almost non-existent shoulders as you could in the cartoon.
Executive producer and showrunner Zi Jun has a different take on the whole thing. He said:
“I’m frustrated with anything. Whatever Gremlin stuff we can get, whether we create it or not. And, you know, Warner Bros. has four different Batmans at the same time. Let’s do everything!
Hay then agreed that “the idea of competing gizmos” was an interesting one. Joe Dante came up with this classic idea:
“Gizmo meets Batman, I can see that.”
To be honest, I don’t hate it! What do you hope to see the future hold for Gizmo and other Gremlins?
