Disney+ is gearing up to launch its upcoming animated series Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The animated series is said to tell the story of Peter Parker as he becomes Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe, with a journey unlike anything we’ve ever seen and a style that reflects the character’s early comic roots.
As much as the creators wanted to make the series a canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, they decided to abandon the idea and just make a fun series without restrictions.
Marvel TV head Brad Winderbaum explained in a recent interview with Phase Hero:
“It started out as, ‘Okay, it’s Spider-Man’s first year, he’s going to be a freshman, can we get away from this and be entirely in the Marvel Universe?’ We realized early on in the development process that this was actually going to make We’re stuck.
“We couldn’t really use his rogues gallery, we couldn’t really use his origin. It wasn’t interesting, honestly. We had to put so many restrictions on our story to make it canon.
Winderbaum added that the constraints imposed by trying to make the show canon bogged down the team in terms of development when trying to align Peter Parker’s timeline in the show with that of the current live-action Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe. “The Dilemma” by Tom Holland.
“Every project I work on, they have their own lives… You have to let them live their lives and go where they want to go.”
Still, the show will feel very familiar and authentic to the Spider-Man I know and love from the comics.
“It does have a lot of DNA that is very similar to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man depiction in the MCU, but it also actually goes all the way back to Steve Ditko. It’s adjacent to the main continuity, but what’s really about it is Inherited about roles.
The animated series is based on Holland’s Spider-Man, but takes place in an alternate timeline in the Marvel Universe where Peter Parker is directed by Norman Osborn instead of Tony Stark.
hudson thames Spider-Man’s voice, Coleman Domingo Play as Osborn, and Grace Song Will play Peter’s best friend Nicotin. Charlie Cox Will return as Daredevil. The show will also star some of our favorite comic book villains like Doctor Octopus, Chameleon, Rhino, and Scorpion.
