We may only be two days into 2025, but Doechii is already starting to get on track.
On Thursday (Jan. 2), the up-and-coming Tampa rapper released the highly anticipated music video for “Denial Is a River,” a highlight-reel cut from her breakthrough mixtape Crocodile bites never heal. In a clip from “Denial,” co-directed by Carlos Acosta and James Mack, Dochiy calls upon classic black situation comedies, e.g. family affairs The trailer uses the show’s beloved theme song, “As Days Go By,” and recounts the tumultuous final years of her life and career.
The video features Doechii as the star of her own autobiographical sitcom, with appearances from comedians Zack Fox and Rickey Thompson; Grammy-nominated TDE artists ScHoolboy Q and SiR; advertising billboard– Drawing artists Teezo Touchdown, Earl Sweatshirt and Baby Tate; and DJ Miss Milan. A few days ago, Doechii teased the “Rejection” music video during a series on NPR’s Tiny Desk, using two sketches from soap operas and TV series. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and camp whip gnawing.
In addition to the new music video, Doechii will host a livestream titled “Denial Is a Stream,” which will begin on January 2 at 6pm ET via her YouTube channel. The livestream marks another hot promotion for Denial Is a River, following seven-time Emmy Award-nominated actress and producer Issa Rae’s performance with Genius Open Mic.

Doechii hopes to take home up to three Grammy Awards when the ceremony airs on February 2. She was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance (“Nissan Altima”). Kaytranada’s remix of her 2024 indie single “Alter Ego” with JT earned him a Best Remix Album nomination.
