Duran Duran pays tribute to the late American filmmaker David Lynch, whose brilliant and bizarre films provided an inspirational foundation for a young Nick Rhodes.
Rhodes wrote on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee’s Instagram that Lynch was a creative superhero from “the moment I first saw one of his films.” Eraserhead As a teenager.

Duran Duran has a special connection with the director, who died in battle due to health issues. Back in 2011, Lynch directed the Duran Duran episode of the American Express “Unstaged” concert series. “The stranger it is, the more beautiful it is,” Rhodes, the band’s founding keyboardist, told Billboard.com at the time. “What attracted us most to working with David was that we loved the way he thought about things and how he always tried to make things different from other people. Lynch died at the age of 78, just five months after announcing he was housebound for fear he would contract COVID-19 after being diagnosed with emphysema due to years of smoking.
Lynch, a native of Missoula, Montana, is a master of surrealism. His dark film style is called “Lynchian” in the creative community. Several of his films have been nominated for Oscars, including Like a person, blue velvet and mulholland drive. Although Lynch has never won a competitive Oscar, he was awarded the Oscar for Lifetime Achievement in 2019.
Duran Duran’s Rhodes wrote in a post: “Curious about the unknown and never afraid of dark alleys, he is an uncompromising experimental artist with a true Unique perspective.
Thanks in part to Lynch’s inspiration, Rhodes began pursuing the art of photography at a young age, exhibiting a portfolio of his work and publishing several books about his work. “Sadly,” Rhodes wrote, “the weather in California today is stormy and there are no lucky numbers.”
