It’s been 22 years since Disney released Lilo & Stitch It was first released in theaters and to this day, it remains a beloved classic for children and adults alike.
hollywood reporter News broke that the company would remaster the Hawaii-centric film into a live-action/CG hybrid in October 2018, plans that were initially delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s been a long road since then, but production on the film was finally completed earlier this year.
Mike Van Weiss wrote the first script for the live-action film, but Chris Kekaniokalani-Bright took over and rewrote the script before filming began. Jon M. Chu was initially in talks to direct Lilo & Stitch However, other obligations prevented it from being completed, so Dean Fleischer Camp ended up taking charge of the project.
The remake started ramping up in July 2022 but was delayed due to several incidents. First, production was shut down after a fire broke out in a trailer on the set, sparking an arson investigation to find out the cause. With the issue resolved, production resumed on the film in April 2023, with the rest of the cast announced. But it shut down again in May 2023 after the writers’ strike began, and stayed that way when the actors’ strike began a few months later.
After Sydney Elizebeth Adugong was cast as Nani, the sister of Lilo (played by newcomer Maia Kealoha), the filmmakers became famous in 2002 was accused of colorism by casting an actress with lighter skin than Nani in his film. Initially, Kahiau Machado was slated to play David Kawena, Nani’s love interest and Lilo’s friend. But after he was found using racial slurs on social media, the character was recast and replaced by Kaipot Dudoit.
