Front Office (2024): ME Double S is right

2024 horror movies lobby As the “villain” in the movie says, it’s a giant old ME double S (chaos). Not just the poop variety. It relies on perhaps the most annoying of tropes to tell its story.

    Please read on.

    story

Norman and Belinda are a couple who have just given birth to their first child. Enter Norman’s newly widowed stepmother Solange. A controlling religious fanatic begins to take over their lives. Solange ultimately turns their existence into a living hell. Has been living in the front room of their house.

    main cast

    Brandi Norwood plays Belinda.

    Andrew Burnap was a Norman.

    Katherine Hunter stars as Solange.

    Houston, we have a problem

There are actually several problems. Even before Poop Revenge, there were plenty of questions lobby:

    • Disney has made a fortune off evil stepmother/father stories since the mid-1900s. Granted, these all come from various fairy tales, but the movies of Old Uncle Walter made them more famous than their literary authors. This type of story is in tatters.
    • This is the metaphorical city. Hollywood’s overused depictions of Christians as: a) evil, b) insane, and/or c) possessed reach their peak here. exist lobby Solange is all three. Thankfully, though, the filmmakers chose not to specify which church this terrifying woman belonged to.
    • Norman Jean? Every time we hear his name, the image of Marilyn Monroe rushes to the forefront. Although it does raise the question of whether Norman’s parents actually wanted a girl or were just big fans of Norma Jean. It does bring madness.

    poop instead of bear

lobby Really happy that the evil stepmom keeps getting dirty. This act of revenge against the young couple she was living with was absolutely disgusting. In real life? This is not uncommon for older adults with dementia. Is it revenge? Not likely. Those suffering from this mentally debilitating disease are reluctant to participate in “poop attacks.”

    behind the camera

Max Eggers and Sam Eggers directed the film. They also share writing credit with Susan Hill. Max, who wrote the superlative The Lighthouse (2019), may have just stumbled upon it. We won’t hold it against him, but hopefully he and Sam can come out of this abyss.

    It all depends on acting

Norwood and Burnap both shine here. This is somewhat noteworthy because lobby It’s a stinky thing. (Pun intended.) Hunter takes her little cotton socks too far here to the point of being irritating. Her sweet lines keep people on edge.

Still, the actors did their best to pull off this silly storyline. We do feel for the young couple who did go through this poop fest.

    judgment

lobby Earn a paltry 2 stars here. Turning the “villain” and the older woman into another crazy Christian was absolutely evil and lost a full 3 stars for this decision. A24 really messed this up. If you feel like you really have to see this movie, it’s currently streaming on Max.
