Like Water and Oil, this is a rare, interesting character, albeit one whose personality type we would avoid as a potty on a hard summer’s day.
No one wants to shake hands and drink with these fictional representations of all the worst traits. But visually indulging in their dirty dealings and delightful sadism is just too much fun to pass up.
Why anger, boiling hatred, and ominous discomfort draw us in again and again deserves its own article. After all, civilized society has its warnings.
Perhaps Joffrey Baratheon lurks in the dark recesses of the seemingly inert parts of everyone’s gray matter.
Perhaps it’s better to talk about the characters we find interesting but don’t want to meet, letting the insanity within us sleep and hope to never wake up.
Joffrey Baratheon – “Game of Thrones”
It’s hard to imagine anyone more interesting than this gigantic boner. How on earth he managed to survive more than a season without being strangled to death by Cersei is a question worth pondering.
Of course, Cersei herself might belong on this list. No matter how bad Joffrey gets, or how strong the urge to rearrange that smug little face into fun new shapes is, we tune in to every episode.
Aegon and Aemond of the House of Dragons look like caretakers at the local dog shelter, flanked by the stubborn, chattering, smug sadistic idiot Joffrey.
A slobbering idiot with a penchant for torture and random sadomasochism, Joffrey went through four seasons as we watched with bated breath, waiting to see what he would do next .
There have been plenty of interesting villains throughout The Last Kingdom’s five seasons and movies, although Uba stands out among the others.
He’s not necessarily a hateful character like Joffrey. Uba is the epitome of mania. No one knows what he will do.
His intimidation factor is fascinating, especially in front of Uhtred, a warrior who has yet to be challenged (at least not by an experienced fighter).
Rune Tempt, who plays a different kind of warrior in Taika Waititi’s Time Bandits, is a complete mess. If this were the description of Dungeons & Dragons, then Chaotic Neutral would be Ubar Ragnarsson.
The brains behind The Last Kingdom foreshadowed himself well in the first season, chewing up his scenes with hilarity, madness and instantaneous rage, cool scorn and undertones of danger, all in less than a hour. Minutes of screen time to complete.
Smoker – The X-Files
This guy is on every list, and for good reason. He might break the fourth wall to make sure his name is etched on every list, good or bad.
His backstory is a mystery within a mystery – a series of controversial conspiracies. A guy who smokes is always fun, but he’s definitely not someone you want to hang out with.
You could disappear, along with your entire lineage, family history, and even your dog.
All the great secrets of the FBI, the CIA, the Department of Homeland Security, and (insert three-letter agency here) are hidden deep in his hippocampus and cerebellum.
The worst part of his shady plot is that he believes he is right and is destined to save humanity, simply by sacrificing billions or so. No big deal.
Harmony Korbel – Severance Package
Perhaps the most mysterious and sinister figure behind Apple TV+’s Severance is Harmony Cobel. There must be some dark psychology behind the stone veneer and calm, disdainful gaze.
Until she throws a coffee cup at you or lets out an angry scream out of nowhere.
Harmony is far from the top of Lumeng’s food chain, but she is the floor manager who controls the “Innie” lives of her cut-off subordinates.
She also plays the friendly neighbor to Mark Scout’s “Outie,” though there’s something nosy and overly curious about her eager eyes. As an admirer of Egan, her bedroom and cellar are typical serial killer themes.
She may be funny to watch, but all of her scenes are riddled with twisted vipers, slithering out of bondage positions out of the corners of one’s eyes. Never underestimate harmony.
Robert Sims – Silo
Speaking of Common, fun to watch is an understatement. The guy even went head-to-head with John Wick. This is a lineage in itself.
His character, Robert Sims, a mysterious agent hiding from the government, is fascinating in many ways, not least of all as a potential path to redemption.
Since he can easily throw people down stairwells thousands of feet up, this is also a good reason to avoid hanging out with this guy after hiring them.
Robert Sims is the absolutely dedicated, no-nonsense, black-and-white security chief of the technocratic government’s judiciary, pulling the strings from behind the scenes in the silo.
He is able to go from 0% to 110% at any given moment, much like a cobra luring his victim into calm silence before delivering the fatal blow.
Donna Berzato – Bear
Donna Berzatto is the embodiment of stress and anxiety, hiding in a show that amplifies stressful situations. The few scenes in which Donna appears are enough to give viewers a heart attack.
Dealing with such a person in real life would be a travesty of epic proportions. Donna is not inherently bad. She only qualifies as a semi-villain in “Bear,” since the show really has no villains.
Donna is a self-made martyr who devotes herself to or creates a cause and makes herself the sacrificial center of that cause. She wanted others to change the structure of their lives to accommodate her atonement.
While there are several theories as to the psychological condition she may be suffering from, there’s no doubt that she causes an instant whirlwind of chaos wherever she goes. She’s fun to watch, but only if you have a whole bottle of scotch handy.
Aemond Targaryen – House of Dragons
You have to be constantly wary of the person in the room who rarely speaks. When they did, their voices were barely above a whisper. The fact that Aemond has only one eye makes it harder to pin down the thoughts lurking behind that lone glass orb.
Eamond commanded the screen, commanding all the attention in the room, despite his often reserved demeanor.
Even though he seems calm, at times, if his Facebook profile gets a boost, he won’t hesitate to mount his dragon and burn your home and family to ashes and smoldering embers.
His brother was a charred shallow ruin, and now Aemond is the regent with the largest living dragon in the world. He’s a little outnumbered right now, so his mood swings are likely to change in an instant.
It’s fun to watch Aemond’s commanding presence, a far cry from his previous role as warrior monk and king’s bastard son in The Last Kingdom.
Dorothy Turner – Servant
It is a difficult choice between Dorothy and Nell. However, Dorothy took the cake because she was the one cooing at the plastic and rubber baby.
Her superficial personality is happy and sweet, until you observe the scary rubber baby in her hand.
It can be said that Dorothy went through a severely traumatic experience. It’s understandable when you find yourself responsible for the death of your own child.
Unfortunately, this makes Dorothy a very unstable person and not someone you want to spend time with at the dinner table every night.
She will cheerfully welcome you into her home and then fly into a rage without any fuss.
Of course, that’s why Lauren Ambrose’s role as Dorothy is so interesting. You never know what you’re going to get from one moment to the next.
Quintus Benedictus Dio – Elector
Charismatic, talkative, witty, and vaguely homicidal, Quintis strikes the viewer as someone who can equally easily crack sarcastic jokes and decapitate you in public.
He looks charming. He wasn’t too smart, but he was smart enough to run a small part of Galilee in the Roman Empire.
Whether he’s thinking of ways to starve the natives, leave their camp, or engage in casual conversation over drinks, Quintis never expresses his intentions, which makes him a dangerous figure.
As an Archon throughout most of the series, he has the ability to make life difficult for nearly everyone who crosses his path.
Quintis proves that insane power is often given to the most evil of humanity – those who laugh as they murder and exploit.
These fine, upright people are fun to watch, but don’t hang out with them unless you like hanging your life and sanity on a string.
What do you think? Are there other people (not necessarily villains) that seem interesting that you avoid like the plague? Please leave a comment and let us know!
