I’m currently working on my second feature film, Split. The film focuses on the breakdown of the marriage between Jack and his new wife, Bethany. The wife, Bethany, suffers from borderline personality disorder.
Unlike the first film I shot on RED (“Footsteps”), I decided to shoot this film on BlackMagic cameras. Due to the nature of the film, the budget and the size of the crew, I decided that using smaller camera opportunities would give us a better final result. Essentially, I wanted more time to focus on the story, actors, and other important elements. The only problem is, the BMC camera wasn’t released in time so I needed to choose a new camera to shoot with. I considered many options, including going back to RED or shooting in hybrid formats, but ultimately decided to use my GH2.
I was hesitant about it at first because I’d never used this camera (or any digital SLR) on a project of this size and wasn’t sure if it was up to the task. However, I took a risk and invested in some new gear and lenses for my camera, and it paid off. The quality I get from the camera is truly outstanding and I’m continually impressed by this little machine.
Here are some lightly touched upon screenshots from the shoot so far:
In order for this camera to work in the environment I want, I do need a lot of gear. Below is a curated list of some of the gear I currently use on my GH2. Over the next few weeks I will be doing some reviews of these products and describing how they performed on this shoot:
Cinevate Atlas 10 FLT Slider
Jag35 offset DSLR shoulder rig and follow focus
DiCAPac Underwater Single Lens Camera Bag
Western Digital My Book Studio – Metal
Sachtler Ace Tripod
Marshall M-CT7 7-inch monitor
