Who says comedy has no substance?
The seventh episode of Season 1 of Georgie and Mandy’s Marriage was very touching. It has the perfect blend of comedy and drama while telling an emotional and relatable story.
Even better, it gave Connor something more to do than just walk through the kitchen making wacky requests that everyone rolled their eyes at. He’s no longer the butt of jokes—he’s finally a mature character, full of hopes, dreams, and frustrations with his relationship with his parents.
Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 Featured a Random Road Trip But It Worked
I’m not entirely sure why Georgie and Jim decided to take a road trip.
It had something to do with that Mustang they were trying to restore, but I missed what it was.
Whatever their mission was, they didn’t accomplish it on screen, and that didn’t matter. The purpose of this road trip is for Connor to discover an ally in Georgie.
I can understand Connor’s frustration with his parents.
Jim was not trying to steer Connor toward a job or career path that might interest him; He just thinks that because Connor is different (aka a 1990s neurodivergent), he will never be able to support himself.
The good news for Connor is that the dot-com revolution is coming, which will bring about all kinds of jobs that weren’t possible before, so he might be able to carve out a career path in middle age.
Of course, if he was working online from home, his parents might not know what he was doing and continue to worry about what would happen to him while they were gone, but at least he would have a choice he doesn’t have now.
I totally get where they’re coming from, but I also strongly understand how Connor feels.
I’ve been on the receiving end of conversations like this.
Although the worried person means well, the unintentional message is that you are broken in some indescribable way because you can’t do things the way you “should” do them.
In the 1990s, Connor’s parents may have been aware that he was different in some ways, but it’s unlikely that they were aware that he was autistic or otherwise neurodivergent.
Which makes it even more frustrating. When you’re expected to understand things you don’t because your brain is structured differently, you feel like there’s a code for success you can’t crack and start to wonder what’s wrong with you.
(This may also be why Young Sheldon had Sheldon evaluated and determined to be neurotypical, when he clearly wasn’t – there wasn’t that much awareness about autism at the time, and anyone who could communicate verbally All are considered neurotypical, even if they are “weird.”
Connor wanted his father to be proud of him, or at least happy for him, so much that he followed his father’s instructions and actually got a job and tried to become a waiter at the diner where they stopped to eat. He was then confused as to why this was not an acceptable solution.
Georgie’s acceptance of Connor stems from growing up with Sheldon
George and Sheldon went through a rough time growing up together. He was called “dumb brother” when everyone raved about Sheldon’s intelligence, so naturally he didn’t try to understand the feeling that Sheldon was so different from most people.
He told Mandy that he regretted not trying to understand, and while he didn’t want to pick up the phone and correct the situation, it made him try harder to talk to Connor.
That’s why Connor says Georgie is a “great guy,” which shocks Audrey.
Georgie doesn’t think it’s weird or acceptable for Connor to wear headphones on road trips to block out the outside world. Jim thinks this is another reason Connor can’t understand, while Georgie thinks it’s just Connor being Connor.
Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 makes it clear what Audrey’s real problem is
Audrey and Mandy’s scenes help humanize Audrey.
She dislikes George the same way Archie Bunker disliked his son-in-law in “All in the Family”: She sees George as an obstacle to a child’s rightful life and a failure who cannot provide for his child. one person.
Audrey’s surprising dream of getting involved in politics never came to fruition, so she wants Mandy to be free to turn her dream into reality. Having a child at such a young age and being tied to an even younger father should never have been part of the plan.
Ironically, Audrey doesn’t understand why Mandy wants to decorate CeeCee’s nursery with neutral things, even though Mandy just wants CeeCee to grow up and realize that she can be anyone and anything she wants to be.
Audrey and Mandy have this, but Mandy is so busy resisting Audrey’s ideas of what her life should be, and Audrey so busy imposing her views, that neither of them realize it .
Despite the heavy subject matter, Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 is hilarious
The best thing about “Broncos” is that it has heart and substance without losing sight of the fact that it’s supposed to be a comedy.
Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 had several funny moments.
Audrey: The first night you slept in your room, I cried.
Mandy: You didn’t.
Audrey: Of course I do. You are my sweet little angel and I love you. Then you learned to talk and ruined everything.
There are some great quips and funny dialogue, but my favorite is the sequence where George negotiates a higher price for the water pump than Jim planned to pay, not realizing that the “other guy” he’s competing against is Jim.
I couldn’t help but laugh at the way these two screwed themselves out of the original low price through all the unnecessary negotiation.
random thoughts
- It’s a real shame that George and Mandy would eventually break up. Georgie seems to be an important part of the McAllister family and I feel Jim and Connor should have given him a final divorce.
- George and Mandy’s First Marriage Season 1 Episode 7 without Reuben.
- The laugh/studio audience seemed quiet today which made it a little more bearable.
- I almost forgot this happened in the 1990s and was confused by Audrey’s description of it on Friends until I remembered.
