Movie review:
- Wuchak: **_Detective Southern Gothic with Cate Blanchett_**
- In a small town near coastal Georgia, a widow (Cate Blanchett) struggles to make ends meet with her three sons through her psychic abilities. A young woman (Katie Holmes) goes missing and the authorities turn to her for help. Greg Kinnear, Keanu Reeves, Hilary Swank, Giovanni Ribisi, Gary Cole and JK Simmons were all present.
- The Gift (2001) combines plot elements from Resurrection (1980) with a setting or tone from The Coweta County Murders, The General’s Daughter and a bit of Cape Fear (1991). You can’t beat the cast, the small town Southern vibe is great and the flawed characters are well fleshed out.
- There were no fewer than five possibilities for the culprit, and with 20 minutes remaining it became clear who it was. Sadly, it was so cliche and contrived that I rolled my eyes, not to mention it “stole” the audience’s hope. I don’t want to say more because I don’t want to reveal anything.
- Still, if you can accept this mediocre element, this is still a worthwhile, quality drama. Both Kate and Holmes are appealing in a girl-next-door kind of way.
- It is 1 hour and 51 minutes long and was filmed in the Savannah area (Guyton, Thunderbolt and Springfield).
- Grade: B-/B
