Trent will return for Season 3 on Tuesday, January 7th.
Gina Rodriguez joins the cast as ADA Marion Alba and will interact with Will Trent in the season premiere. Rumor has it that she had a run-in with the agents, and they were then forced to work together to take down a violent gang in Atlanta.
TV Fanatic chatted with Gina Rodriguez during a recent virtual press tour, and she discussed how the opportunity came about and the dynamic between the cast.
She also teased what she likes about new character Marion Alba and the way Marion interacts with Will.
Sounds like it’s going to be a fun season as it was a great chat. Check out the interview below.
Gina, we’re excited to see you on the Will Trent Show. How did this opportunity come about?
Luckily, Ramon Rodriguez, a friend of mine for over ten years, invited me to join him on his show. I’m lucky he did because Will Trent is incredible.
The show is great and the actors are great. I’m so lucky to have this opportunity to create something so different from the television I’ve done.
It gave me a chance to be someone new; to try something new, to try this new character, to be able to mix the drama that I’ve done in the past with a little bit of my comedy. I attribute all of that to Ramon. Ramon is the greatest.
Will Trent has essentially been the same actor since the show began. So, how has it been since you became the new girl?
It’s funny because I didn’t even think of it that way. I’ve known Ramon for years and knew I would play with my friend. As a leader, he creates a beautiful, loving, welcoming environment.
But you are right. I’m the new girl. If I had not entered this field with so many great people, things might have been different.
Erika, Christensen, Iantha Richardson and Sonja Sohn, everyone was loving and caring. Some of the parents on the show also understand that I am a mom who loves her children and her family.
Honestly, it was an easy transition to come here and play with everyone. Things might have been different, but luckily, it was pretty awesome.
I’m happy because they’ve had the same cast for about two years and you’re the first new series regular in about two years.
They have a rhythm and a flow, but I feel lucky because I’ve been doing TV shows and directing for over a decade.
I know where everyone stands on television and feel comfortable in television production. So I wanted to be directly involved and help drive the production.
I know a lot about what it takes to make a TV show. So, when I go on a show, I try not to step on other people’s toes. I try to jump right in, do my job, and contribute where I can.
Absolutely. So, what can you say about your new character Marion Alba?
Marion Alba is very straightforward and no-nonsense. She is strong-willed and knows what she wants. She is very career-oriented.
It was a great opportunity for her to come to Atlanta from another city to continue her journey and career as an ADA. She is eager to help and is not afraid to put herself in a position to help.
Her criticism of Will is somewhat misplaced because she has no idea where he stands or how people treat him.
Everyone knows Agent Trent, and they either respect him or are annoyed by him. She has a blank piece of paper. Therefore, she has confidence in herself and does not let Will influence her.
This might be interesting to see. Will you be interacting primarily with GBI, or will we see you interacting with some APD as well?
Luckily, I interacted with everyone. Yes, I’m in, my hands are everywhere. Marian is Fulton County’s new ADA.
She oversees a lot of things and I contribute in a lot of different ways. So, there is nothing stopping Marion from interacting with a lot of people.
What will fans think of a possible love interest for Will? Some want Angie and Will to reunite, some want Sarah Linton to perform this year.
Correct. Am I Sarah Linton? No, I’m kidding. I have no idea. But we’ll see. I think the writing is so good that you get on a roller coaster ride, just like we did in the past with Will Trent.
You feel all kinds of different things. This is a big part of what Marion does. She was very helpful in handling these new cases and was intertwined in many ways by helping many people with GBI and APD.
I’m curious about what fans think and how my character’s evolution makes people feel.
What do you like most about your character?
Oh, there are so many. I love that she is grounded, clear about her needs, has boundaries, and revealed her past. So, she came with very little luggage. She doesn’t want other people’s baggage either.
She dares to speak her mind and is not someone who gives in easily.
Therefore, she is not afraid of a space with a strong personality. I think that’s my favorite part: she’s a good badass chick.
I can’t wait to see this. Last question, please describe the Season 3 premiere to me in three words.
It’s uncomfortable, exciting, and the beginning of an epic adventure—so many words. I’m giving you too many words, but I’m a mom and my brain is just scrambled eggs. But this is the beginning of a pretty epic adventure.
Will Trent Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, January 7 at 8/7c on ABC. The show will premiere on Hulu the next day.
