The Grateful Dead’s surviving members have revealed they were planning a special 60th anniversary party ahead of Phil Lesh’s recent death.
Lesh, the founding bassist of the California rock band, died on October 25 at the age of 84. Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart gave scheduled interviews. cbs this morning Its purpose also includes Lesh.
Now that the interview has aired, the surviving members note that a Grateful Dead 60th anniversary reunion project is already in the works, with plans for the four members to get together again to jam.
“We’ll see where it goes,” Will said. “But we just want to play the four of us. Now it’s just the three of us.
“I hope we can play with him again,” Kreutzmann added. “So that’s my sadness because I know he wants to play with us again too.”
“We were chatting,” Will continued. “We’re actually getting together tomorrow to sing some songs.”
The Grateful Dead were originally formed in 1965 and performed with various lineups for 30 years until disbanding in 1995 following the death of lead guitarist and vocalist Jerry Garcia.
While various reunion projects have formed over the years (including The Other Ones, which featured Lesh, Weir, Kreutzmann and Hart performing at various points), the four musicians performed at the 50th anniversary Fare Thee Well concert in 2015 On the reunion.
In 2024, Dead & Company embarks on their final tour, but leaves the door open for future performances and projects.
Next month, Lesh, Ware, Kreutzman and Hart will be recognized as part of the 2024 Kennedy Center Honors, with 2023 recipient Queen Latifah hosting the ceremony.
