Grimes was reflecting on the state of the world amid the ongoing wildfire crisis in Los Angeles, where she and nearly 200,000 other Californians were forced to evacuate this week.
In a tweet posted on Thursday (Jan. 9), the musician wrote that she thinks the “vibe here is pretty biblical” and posits that “when our culture, every level of our environment, our governments, our institutions, Mental health etc. are clearly broken.
“Fortunately, unlike all previous dark ages, we are immune to the message of loss,” she continued. “Printing presses, hard drives, etc., but what do we do?”
Wind-driven fires first broke out in the Pacific Palisades area on Tuesday (January 7) and quickly spread throughout Los Angeles County, destroying an estimated 10,000 homes and buildings. Since then, more fires have broken out in the Hollywood Hills, Pasadena, Altadena, Sylmar and Calabasas, with at least 10 people reportedly dead in the fires, CNN reported.
As of Thursday, some 180,000 residents had been under evacuation orders or warnings, including the “Oblivion” singer, who tweeted the day before: “Just had to evacuate, tried to go to a friend’s house/received evacuation warning online .
“Will the whole city disappear?” she added. “This is a serious tragedy for Los Angeles – I feel deeply saddened for everyone.”

“The biggest challenge right now is not to create and consume dopamine anger bait on social media, but to focus on thoughtful, rational, fact-based discourse so that we can properly diagnose and solve our problems,” Grimes wrote.
