A lot of fans love what DC Animation is doing Harley Quinn animated series. The creative team clearly had a lot of fun and tried to do something new and edgy with the stories they told.
In the series’ third season, one scene that was originally planned to be cut was Batman’s attack on Catwoman. Co-creator and showrunner Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumaker recently provided some insight into that cap scenario.
In an interview with Inverse, Halpern and Schumacker revealed more details about the Harley Quinn moment that was shot down by DC.
“We wanted a cold open,” Halpern explained. “We thought it would be fun to start with ‘Catwoman.’ [laying down]but you’re not quite sure what’s going on…
“We wanted the idea that he wasn’t doing it for her. He didn’t understand her, he couldn’t connect with her sexually because he couldn’t connect with her emotionally.
The purpose of this scene was to provide some commentary on Batman and Catwoman’s lack of emotion, which makes sense from a narrative perspective, but DC wasn’t happy to do it.
According to Halpern, DC told the creative team, “You can’t do this. You absolutely can’t do this.” He went on to say, “If Batman disses someone as well, it’s going to be hard to sell the toys.” “
So, we get a scene where Batman gives Catwoman a foot massage, which ultimately does a great job of showing the difficulty Batman has with Catwoman communicating.
When news first broke that the sex scene had been cut, there was a lot of discussion on social media. Halpern mused that “things might have been more important” if the scene itself had simply been included in the episode.
