Sonny has been on a dangerous rope for a while now, and things come to a head on HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 6.
The longtime captain has been grappling with Zion’s death since we were introduced to him, and Rocky’s death only brings more heavy emotions to the table.
Oddly enough, Em was the only one who could see it.
Rocky’s death is a major blow to a community in which he had invested heavily.
Sonny was particularly saddened by this loss. He looked at the Rocky Memorial and was immediately reminded of Zion and his death.
Sonny was immersed in grief at the moment. Grief and loss clouded his judgment to a frightening degree.
The father of that young family on the beach needs to hear Sonny’s very sound advice. However, what Sonny then turned to him and said was inappropriate to the situation, even though he was trying to make his point.
When Em gave him an ultimatum at the end of HI-Surf Season 1 Episode 5, it seemed harsh, but he really needed help. If you don’t focus on your job like he does, people can die.
That’s how serious it is.
The paddling shots are beautiful and another moment in this show where they showcase authentic Hawaiian culture. This is a traditional Hawaiian tribute to the life of the deceased, and many people may have never seen this ceremony before.
It’s sentimental, yet beautiful and meaningful. There are no better words to describe it.
The team is saddened by Rocky’s death, but it’s clear that Sheena is taking the stress of it all and suffering the consequences of Sonny. She wasn’t talking to anyone, which was evident from the fact that Kainaru didn’t even know what was going on.
Even though Sonny was angry at Sheena (he more or less wanted to take out his misplaced anger on himself), they were in some weird state when they decided to abandon their work for the day.
Neither person was mentally fit to go to work that day, but leaving without a word was also unprofessional.
Grief and loss work in mysterious ways, but in the long run it’s crazy that they left their colleagues like this.
Once again, Em was the only one who seemed to care about it or have any reservations about it.
Em continues to prove that she’s the best choice to lead right now, and it feels like we may be heading to a place at some point this season where a decision will have to be made between the two, and their relationship will deteriorate further than it already has.
But that’s speculation for another day.
Em is looking for Sonny, someone who cares about Sheena, and she knows Sheena needs someone to talk to, even if she’s not ready yet.
I’m not saying everyone needs to coddle Sheena. She’s an adult with an adult job and has to face the consequences of her actions and the reality of a job that deals with absolutes like life and death.
But at the same time, she’s still new, haven’t we seen Kainaru make mistakes? Did he also receive the same punishment as Xina?
It’s not callous at all, as Sheena does make a series of mistakes, but by the time they find Loki, Loki seems to have disappeared. It was a devastating situation, but the way things were going wasn’t right.
It’s understandable that Sheena would second-guess herself and whether she made the right decision in pursuing her dreams, because who hasn’t experienced a mini-crisis when faced with the feeling of letting someone down?
But their jobs, as Em so eloquently put it, will be lost. They’re going to lose people, but they’re also going to save people, and part of the job is being able to compartmentalize it in some way.
It’s certainly not for everyone, but this is Sheena’s first time on the job and she needs someone willing to tell her the truth about what happened and help her prepare for what’s coming next.
Em didn’t get a chance to track Sonny because he didn’t stay home that day but went for a ride on his motorcycle with a friend who wasn’t there because of Sonny’s prank.
Sonny’s bold antics and pushing the boundaries of safety feel like a cry for help and a need to punish himself. But he did so in the most dangerous way, putting multiple people at risk.
Sonny needs help. He had needed help for a long time and knew he needed it, but he was too afraid to get it.
While I firmly believe that if you don’t want to help yourself, no one can help you, Sonny has become a danger to himself and others. If he doesn’t start dealing with some grief, there’s no way he’s going to remain captain.
Everything around Sonny is now unhealthy and he cannot effectively carry out his job through so much pain.
I’m hoping that when he comes home bruised and bruised, he’ll confide in his family about what he just did, and maybe we’ll see him do that in the next installment, but I’m ready for someone to take a stand here.
They’ve tried, but it’s gotten to the point where someone really needs to do something because things are getting dire.
Speaking of Em, she and Sean are going strong and I feel like we skipped their dating phase because the gift giving and public kissing on the clock seemed like such a big leap from the last time we saw them!
Sean seems nice, but we know nothing about him other than being a firefighter. If his issues with Will are any indication, he might be getting tired of the whole Will and Em thing, but that’ll probably happen later.
Someone must have heard me complain that we know nothing about Will, because they decided to give us an in-depth look at a guy who doesn’t do much other than chat with Raka and watch Em.
He and Julie have breakup looks written all over their faces, and at least now we can see it’s not just the Em factor.
Will being so against having anything to do with Julie’s money that he started his own business for extra cash just tells me these two are not on the same page. Granted, we barely see them together, but there’s a disconnect there, and it’s bigger than Em.
Who wants to bet they’ll be done before the fall finale?
Additional rescue instructions
- The man who shot himself through the foot with a fishing rod looked in pain! It was a brutal war.
- Will and Laka often find themselves in the right place and time. This time, instead of breaking up the fight, they helped a young child who might have been in danger had they not been in the area.
- It’s funny how Sheena and Kainaru live together but apparently only communicate when absolutely necessary. Kainaru tried, but Sheena couldn’t pretend to like the man yet.
The mood is a bit subdued this time around after the final hour of action, but there’s still a lot to talk about. So, head into the comments section and let me know what you think!
