One Tree Hill was one of the most iconic teen dramas of the early 2000s. Even though it lasted nine seasons, it still has millions of viewers.
That explains why there’s so much enthusiasm for the return of the WB-turned-CW series.
Last year it was revealed that Netflix was developing a sequel, and now we’ve got another promising update on the matter.
Hilary Burton, who played Peyton Sawyer in the first six seasons, is teaming up with former co-stars Sofia Busch, Daniel Ackles and future showrunner Becky Hartman-Edwards to push The beginning of a new drama.
In a recent interview with People magazine, the 42-year-old noted that news of the reboot was leaked “very, very, very early.”
Of course, there’s a process to pitching a TV show, and there was nothing to sell at the time, as the quartet were still brainstorming ways to bring the show back and, more importantly, whether it was worth it.
“So we are showing something to Netflix and they will decide whether to approve it or not,” she added.
One Tree Hill reboot may lose many familiar faces
While Clinton’s update didn’t include news that the show had been picked up, things are moving in the right direction.
Hillary was happy to have the show told from a female perspective and had nothing but positive things to say about Becky, who she said was “really good at female friendships and multi-generational shows.”
Additionally, the actress is “confident in what’s being presented” and wants Netflix to “go all out.”
Given that One Tree Hill is still popular more than a decade after its finale, there’s a good chance Netflix will go full steam ahead with its reboot.
One Tree Hill has a global audience, and the reboot will be popular with Netflix subscribers around the world, so it’s a win-win situation, unless the streaming platform is concerned that some of the original cast members will be removed from “Missing”
At its core, One Tree Hill is a whole, so eliminating many of the faces that made it so successful might not go as smoothly as expected.
The project is still in its infancy, but it’s hard to imagine Bethany Joy Lenz and James Lafferty not appearing in some capacity.
Netflix’s ‘One Tree Hill’ to be revived 20 years later
The new series will air 20 years after the original, and will reportedly center on Brooke (Busch) and Peyton, who face a very different world after becoming parents.
It’s not a groundbreaking concept, but it could be a huge success story, so time will tell if it becomes a reality.
If Netflix ultimately abandons the project, other companies will be interested. Heck, we wouldn’t be surprised if The CW took up the challenge.
In recent years, the network has replaced much of its programming with more cost-effective original programming, mostly co-produced, such as Sullivan’s “Crossroads.”
But overall, the network has been struggling, so a high-profile comeback from One Tree Hill could be the perfect way to get the network noticed again.
