British band Hot Chip and Sleaford Mods have combined their contrasting musical styles to create two songs as part of a benefit single for the War Child charity.
Titled “Nom Nom Nom” and “Cat Burglar,” the two songs were recorded at the iconic Abbey Road Studios and pressed onto 7-inch vinyl, packaged with artwork by British artist David Shrigley.
All proceeds from sales of the single will be donated to War Child, an organization dedicated to improving the psychosocial health of children affected by conflict.
The collaboration is part of Abbey Road’s Lock-In series, which the studio says “aims to illuminate the music-making experience and provide a window into an otherwise closed process.” For their latest Lock-In, Londoners Hot Chip invited Nottingham duo Sleaford Mods into the studio for a collaboration that has since been nicknamed ‘Hot Mods’.
“It was a great experience spending a day at Abbey Road making these songs,” Hot Chip said of the pair. “We arrived without a plan but quickly started working together in a harmonious way, with a lot of improvisation and very little self-awareness. We are very grateful to Sleaford Mods for joining us and are very proud of the result.
“The day we got cold we just gave it to him,” added Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods. “‘Nom Nom Nom’ is the lyrical continuation of our album UK Green Andrew’s keyboard riff is built by Hot Chip and ends with a great chorus from Alexis.
“‘Cat Burglar’ is a strange blend of progressive rock and B-52 improvisation that explores the narrow corridors of modern human experience.”
As Williamson said, Sleaford Mods last released an album in 2023 British grim. The record became their highest charting hit of their career, peaking at number three in the UK charts. Likewise, Hot Chip’s latest is 2022 Madness/Releasepeaking at No. 16 in their home country.
